Liam McIlvanney’s first book, Burns the Radical, won a Saltire Award. His novels include All the Colours of the Town, Where the Dead Men Go (winner of the 2014 Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Crime Novel) and The Quaker.
He has written reviews and criticism for the London Review of Books and The Guardian. Liam McIlvanney lives in Dunedin, New Zealand where he is Professor of Scottish literature at the University of Otago. He specialises in Scottish literature and culture since 1707, including Robert Burns, Scottish vernacular poetry, the Glasgow Novel, Ulster-Scots poetry, contemporary Scottish writing, Irish-Scottish literary connections, literature of the Scottish Diaspora, and Scottish crime fiction.
Liam McIlvanney was born in Kilmarnock.
