Year 1
The first year is designed to allow for structured exploration. It provides you with opportunities to try out different subjects beyond those you have applied to study at University. This gives you the chance to experiment and also helps you to build a broader based understanding of the social world, regardless of what you eventually decide to specialise in.
What will you study?
In your first year you'll study three subjects including the one or two that are named on your application.
Typically you'll study one course in each subject per semester.
Year 2
In second year, we ask you to make choices about the subjects you may want to specialise in throughout your studies. This allows you to start building your expertise while also giving you opportunities to take a range of elective courses that help you to develop key skills.
What will you study?
In your second year you'll continue with two of your three subjects from first year.
You'll also study electives courses, including from our University-wide Curriculum for Life programme.
Years 3 and 4
In third and fourth year you will specialise in one or two subject areas, developing discipline-specific expertise. Honours students will also complete a dissertation or other substantive piece of independent research.
What will you study?
This depends on the subject area(s) you study. In all cases you will have the opportunity to choose different optional courses within your specialism(s).
