Information for Students

"Graduates who have had no previous work experience at all are unlikely to be successful during the graduate recruitment selection process and have little or no chance of receiving a job offer for their (chosen) organisations’ graduate programmes”. (Graduate Market Review 2015).

Taking part in employability initiatives allows students the opportunity to gain real world experiences relevant to the workplace and so improve their skills and experiences. In an increasingly competitive jobs market, graduates need to demonstrate to employers that they have the right skills and competencies as well as knowledge.

The National Union of Students have a range of resources with expert advice on what employers are looking for and practical tips to help students meet these requirements.

Benefits of employability initiatives

  • Allows you to apply your knowledge gained through your time at the University of Glasgow

  • Helps you to develop the employability skills that employers want such as team work, problem-solving and communications skills
  • Leads to personal and professional development including self-confidence and self-discipline
  • Gives you exposure to and the opportunity to network with people from external organisations
  • Helps you to think through your learning options and career choices
  • Gives you experience of the recruitment process - and helps you develop your CV and interview experience
  • Increases the possibility that you might be recruited in the future by the employers you come in to contact with
  • Allows you to see your research/project with a partner, turned in to something of real value/fulfilling a real business need

Things to consider: All dissertations/projects that engage with human research subjects will require ethics approval. Your Glasgow Supervisor will be able to support you with this. For more information on Ethics and approval process please visit: Ethics Webpages
