Applying for Research Funding
All staff in the College of Social Sciences will get professional support from the Project Coordinators in the College Research Support Office (CRSO) or Overseas Team to apply for research funding.
The CRSO Project Coordinators and Overseas Team provide advice on funder and scheme suitability, assist with project budget creation, organise reviews and approvals, engage specialist support (where appropriate), and control sign off and submission. The CRSO and Overseas teams also provide and engage enhanced bid development support to assist you.
Proposals that have not been processed by the either a College Research Support Office Project Coordinator or the overseas team, as appropriate, cannot be signed off and submitted.

EU FUNDING
Applying to Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) or as a Co-I to Horizon Europe
You will be supported by the Overseas Team.
Get support for a MSCA or Co-I Horizon Europe application
The Overseas Team will support the development of your MSCA or Horizon Europe bid. Please contact them as soon as you are considering an application to ensure you have the best professional advice ahead of starting to write.
Applying to the European Research Council (ERC) or as a PI to Horizon Europe
You will be supported by the Overseas Team and will be eligible for additional bid development support capacity from the Overseas Team and CRSO or an external contractor.
Get support for an ERC or PI Horizon Europe application
The Overseas Team will support the development of your ERC or PI Horizon Europe bid. Please contact them as soon as you are considering an application to ensure you have the best professional advice ahead of starting to write.
You will also be eligible for additional bid development support capacity delivered either by the Overseas Team and College Research Support Office or an external contractor (where appropriate). This will offer some or all of the following services:
- Initial bid document structuring
- Intensive review, feedback and editing of bid documents to ensure fit to call, appropriateness for funder expectations, coherence, and clarity of expression
- Drafting of research bid content, including not limited to, project management, capacity building, communications, impact, and engagement sections
To get this additional support, you will be asked to submit the following to the CRSO Research Devlopment Administrator:
- a CV
- a list of team members in cases where grants are collaborative
- a 200-word project summary
Your submission will be considered by the Dean of Research, Head of Research Development, Overseas Team, and School Research Directors (as appropriate) and additional support allocated.
Any Other Research Funding
Applying to lead your first UKRI grant of between £350k and £1m
You will be supported by a Project Coordinator in the CRSO and can apply for additional bid development support capacity from an external contractor.
Get support to apply to lead your first UKRI grant of £350k - £1m
Your Project Coordinator will support the development of your application. Please contact them as soon as you are considering an application to ensure you have the best professional advice ahead of starting to write.
You will also be able to apply for extra support to develop your proposal from an external grant development team (where appropriate). This will offer some, or all, of the following services:
- Initial bid document structuring
- Intensive review, feedback and editing of bid documents to ensure fit to call, appropriateness for funder expectations, coherence, and clarity of expression
- Drafting of research bid content, including not limited to, project management, capacity building, communications, impact, and engagement sections
To apply for this additional support, you will be asked to submit the following to your Project Coordinator:
- a CV
- a list of team members in cases where grants are collaborative
- a 200-word project summary
Your submission will be considered by the Dean of Research, Head of Research Development, and School Research Directors (as appropriate) and a decision made.
Applying for a grant that is: Over £1m; complex; non-typical funding; of particular reputational or strategic importance
You will be supported by a Project Coordinator and the Research Development team in the CRSO.

The Research Development team are specialist bid development professionals who provide intensive support across the following elements:
- Initial project, team, and bid document structuring
- Formative review, feedback and editing of bid documents to ensure fit to call, appropriateness for funder expectations, coherence, and clarity of expression
- Drafting of research bid content, including not limited to, project management, capacity building, communications, impact, and engagement sections
- Coordination of consortium partners, negotiation of partner contributions, and drafting and agreement of letters of support
Any other application
You will be supported by a Project Coordinator in the CRSO.
