Measurement, Units & Scale

This area is often highlighted, by university academics and industry employers, as one where the capabilities of Scottish school leavers rate poorly relativee to recruits from many other countries.  This view seems to be confirmed by international studies such as PISA.  (This seems to be the case also for the UK as a whole.)

Learning contributing to concept and skills development in this area is scattered over many years and across different subject disciplines. Connecting these distinct yet inter-related elements is, overall, quite an elaborate challenge, but the potential rewards are very substantial, both for the depth of achievement in the specific curriculum topics involved, and for the skillls platform that can be carried forward at more advanced levels.

Our Learning Progression Pathway document maps a development route through the 3 - 15 age school stages.  This highlights connections that can be exploited within the curriculum at each level, so as to reinforce and deepen core understanding.  Our document is available in two variant versions, differing in the detail in which links to the Scottish curriculum are described

  • Version 1 is an easier description to look through for an initial review.  It makes curriculum references by naming some relevant topics that are addressed in the various subjects at each relevant stage.  See Measurement Pathway - v1
  • In the secoond version, cross referencing to the curriculum is both broader and more explicit, in that it identifies a full range of relevant "Experiences and Outcomes," through which the official Scottish curriculum guidance is expressed.  These are referenced in the main document through code identifiers, and an accompanting paper is provided which gives the full text listings for these in each case.  See Measurement Pathway v2 - appendix with full E&Os and Measurement Pathway v2 - appendix with full E&Os
