Research vision

I want to apply cutting edge computational methods to today’s big challenges in biology. In particular, I want to further our understanding of the interplay between genetic and environmental factors in disease development.

I’m really excited by the advances that have occurred in machine learning in the last few years. Deep learning and other innovative algorithms offer the potential to make leaps forward in computational biology, particularly in areas such as classification and segmentation of biological images and the analysis of DNA sequencing data.

I’m especially interested in finding relationships between the physical properties of cells/tissues and the genes that they express. I want to understand how diseases, such as cancer, autoimmune diseases and degenerative diseases, develop by understanding how changes in the environment can impact gene expression and cell function.

Expectations from collaboration

I’m always on the lookout for biologists and medics, who have large amounts of data and would like to work together with a computer scientist. We could use machine learning to make predictions from data, including images, or apply clustering algorithms, or find new ways of understanding and visualising complex relationships in multivariate data.
