The awards seek to recognise outstanding contributions to Scottish society across different walks of life, including Sciences, Arts and Humanities and Public Life and celebrate the legacy of Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun, a seventeenth century Scottish writer and politician and a keen patron of the arts during his lifetime.

In accepting the award, Professor Watt commented: “It’s a thrill to be in this company, and what company, to be recognised from outside your discipline, to receive an award from the Saltire Society, celebrating Scottish imagination, and to receive an award in the name of Andrew Fletcher.”
