Introduction from Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Vice Principal and Head of College of MVLS
Welcome to the summer 2017 edition of the MVLS College newsletter. Summer has arrived in Glasgow, and with it colleagues across the College are busy attending conferences, collaborating with international colleagues, preparing for the new term, and perhaps even taking a well-deserved break. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your hard work throughout this past academic year.
This edition celebrates further successes and accolades for MVLS staff, Schools and Institutes during the last few months. This is welcome affirmation of our colleagues' exceptional commitment, diligence and innovation and of the College’s reputation as a world leader in teaching and research.
I am very proud of the College’s success in the Herald Higher Education Awards, with MVLS winning four prestigious prizes. Congratulations to all colleagues involved with these exciting projects.
I was delighted Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, was awarded a knighthood in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to economics and higher education. This richly-deserved honour recognises the significant contribution Professor Muscatelli has made in both of these areas.
Well done to the following colleagues across the College who also received a Birthday Honour: a CBE to Emeritus Professor Graham Watt, an OBE to Professor Brenda Gibson, and an OBE to Professor Phil Cotton.
Congratulations to the many other colleagues who have received awards recently. Professor Tessa Holyoake was awarded the RSE Royal Medal by the Queen. Professor Iain McInnes received the Lady Margaret MacLellan Award from Tenovus Scotland. Professor Richard Cogdell was awarded Fellowship of the International Carotenoid Society as well as its Trevor Goodwin Award. A team from the Institute of Biodiversity, Animal Health and Comparative Medicine (led by Professor Sarah Cleaveland) received the BBSRC Innovator of the Year Award in the International Impact category, with two individual awards for Professor Cleaveland: the Zoological Society of London’s Frink Medal and the Leeuwenhoek Medal from the Royal Society.
Thank you to all colleagues for your continued efforts in furthering our reputation for teaching and research excellence.
Best wishes
