Introduction from Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Vice Principal and Head of College of MVLS
Welcome to the Summer 2019 edition of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS) newsletter. I am pleased to have the opportunity to highlight some of our excellent achievements across the College from the year so far, and some forthcoming events which I hope will be of interest to you.
Many congratulations to Professor Iain McInnes, Muirhead Professor of Medicine and Director of the Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, on being awarded a CBE, for services to medicine in the 2019 New Year’s Honours. This is well deserved and reflective of his outstanding contribution.
In February, the College was honoured to host Mr John Swinney, Deputy First Minister of Scotland on a visit to our clinical academic campus at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, including our state of the art Imaging Centre of Excellence (ICE) and Clinical Innovation Zone.
In March 2019, the College was proud to host two very important events at our Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Campus, the Glasgow launch of the Industrial Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research in Digital Diagnostics (iCAIRD), based in our Clinical Innovation Zone, and the 113th annual meeting of the Association of Physicians of Great Britain and Ireland.
I was delighted to learn the University has improved by six places and is now ranked 18th in the newly published Complete University Guide 2020. Furthermore, the College is ranked first place in the UK for Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry and Sports Science, and third in the UK for Medicine, behind Oxford and Cambridge. Well done to everyone involved in this marvellous achievement.
I hope you have all managed, or are planning, to take a well deserved summer break and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued hard work and dedication. I look forward to seeing what else we will achieve together in the year ahead.
