Introduction from Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Vice Principal and Head of College of MVLS

‌‌

Welcome to the Summer 2018 edition of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences (MVLS) newsletter. Summer has arrived in Glasgow and across the College colleagues are busy preparing for the new term, hosting visitors to the University, and perhaps even taking a well-deserved break.

I am delighted that the University of Glasgow has recently topped the subject tables in Dentistry, Nursing and Veterinary Medicine, and is third in Medicine, after Oxford and Cambridge, in the Complete University Guide 2019. These outstanding results are testament to the hard work and commitment of all staff across the College.

Many congratulations to colleagues recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.  Professor Foo Yew Liew, Gardiner Professor of Immunology was awarded an OBE for services to Science and Medicine and Professor Carol Tannahill, Director of the Glasgow Centre for Population Health was awarded an OBE for services to Public Health.

Congratulations also to the teams awarded College Teaching Excellence Awards this year. Colleagues’ exceptional commitment is much appreciated and is reflected in our reputation as a world leader for teaching.

Well done to the School of Life Sciences, which has achieved a Bronze Athena SWAN award, bringing the total number of awards to 19 across the University. These awards reflect the hard work and dedication of all colleagues driving forward the equality and diversity agenda.

In June, the College held its fifth Industry Day at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. With a theme of “Collaboration for Innovation”, the day provided opportunities to build new partnerships. I look forward to seeing the outcomes of the day as we work with industry to deliver impact from our research excellence.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your hard work throughout this past academic year and for your continued efforts in furthering the reputation of the College and the University.

Best wishes,

Anna
