Introduction from Professor Dame Anna Dominiczak, Vice Principal and Head of College of MVLS
Welcome to the autumn 2017 edition of the MVLS College newsletter. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome new staff and students to the College. This is a very exciting time for the University as we embark on one of the largest capital development programmes in the UK Higher Education sector, with £1billion being invested on campus over the next ten years in new facilities for research, teaching and learning.
In September, the University of Glasgow was named Scottish University of the Year by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018. I was delighted that Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Veterinary Medicine were all placed in the top 1 or 2 in the UK. I would like to commend the hard work of colleagues across the College for these wonderful results!
Further autumn success for MVLS included winning the Industry and Business Award at Inspiring City Awards; winning the Collaboration for Change Award at Global Game Changers Awards; and a successful bid to the UK Government to lead a Science & Innovation Audit on Precision Medicine Innovation in Scotland.
We were pleased to welcome VIP guests to the College in recent months, including Lord Ian Duncan, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Scotland and Shona Robison MSP, Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Health, Wellbeing and Sport. These visits provided important opportunities to showcase our state-of-the-art facilities and highlight the University’s success in widening participation.
Sadly, we lost two dear friends and colleagues in August: Professor Tessa Holyoake, Professor of Experimental Haematology and Professor Adam Curtis, former Professor of Cell Biology. I would like to extend my condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of both Tessa and Adam. Both will be remembered for their outstanding contributions to the world of scientific research.
Finally, I would like to extend a warm invitation to all MVLS colleagues to join me at College Christmas Council on Tuesday 19th December from 3-5pm in the Atrium, Wolfson Medical School Building; an opportunity to celebrate successes and the festive season over refreshments (please register here). Please remember to nominate colleagues in the Service Excellence Awards and submit your entries to the Images with Impact competition; winners will be announced at College Christmas Council.
