If reading the dictionary sounds dull, think again! Encounter some of the old and rare dictionaries in the University of Glasgow Library’s Special Collections and learn about the fascinating history behind them. This event will introduce you to the playful and argumentative side of dictionaries and the people who make them. Learn how dictionaries of the English language opened up new worlds of expression, and be inspired to look at the language you use every day in a new light.

This event is presented by the College of Arts at the University of Glasgow as part of the Being Human festival, the UK’s only national festival of the humanities, taking place 12–22 November. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy. For further information please see beinghumanfestival.org.
