Waste disposal and recycling guidance
These sections explain the arrangements for disposal of various waste materials produced by the University. There are environmental and legal requirements affecting how unwanted items may be disposed, and waste should only be disposed only by recognised routes. SEPS can provide additional guidance to University staff or students if the standard disposal routes are unsuitable.
General and recyclable waste
General and recyclable wastes can be disposed in the separate bins provided within buildings and around the campus. Estates manages the general waste managment contract. Further information is available on the sustainability webpages.
Chemical waste
Most chemicals produced within the University will need to be disposed via a specialist contractor. Details of how to access this service are provided on the chemical waste disposal page.
Biological and clinical waste
Biological waste, commonly called clinical waste, is material that may be infective or offensive and so needs to be collected and disposed by a specialist contractor. SEPS manage this contract. Further advice on how to access this service can be found on our biological waste page.
Electrical and IT equipment
Electrical equipment must not be put into normal waste streams but must be disposed via a specific recycling system. This ensures that such items are properly collected and can be reused or recycled. Details of how to dispose of unwanted electrical items can be found on the waste electrical equipment page
