Biochemistry & Cell Biology

Theme chair: Prof RJ Cogdell

Academic staff

Dr Catherine Berry

  • Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Fellow
  • While Dr. Berry's research includes cell-nanoparticle interactions, her work at present concentrates on using various nanoparticles (eg. quantum dots, gold and magnetic) conjugated to cell penetrating peptides with the aim of targeted cell uptake to the nucleus.

Dr Matt Dalby

  • Reader
  • Nanobiominetics for bone tissue engineering: osteoprogenitor adhesion and differentiation involving the fabrication on nano-scale surface features that alter stem cell behaviour, driving differentiation towards the production of bone in vitro. A combination of microscopy and genomics are being used to asses the cell phenotype and once optimal topgraphies have been selected, three-dimensional bioreactor culture will allow the production of better bone in the laboratory.

  • Professor of Structural Bioinformatics
  • Structural bioinformatics, the study of biological macromolecules in 3D on computer; focusing on novel structural and chemical features of proteins, especially hydrogen-bonded motifs like the nest consisting of fewer than six amino acid residues.
