English Reviews Part 3 Statler & Waldorf Noise Erection - Kancerogeno (slusaj najglasnije!) Reviewed 2004-04-07 by Sparrow (kzsu,ca,usa) I feel like this CD is pretty dismissable as a whole. I did like a few of the tracks, though, and those are in bold. It's all rock, in some Slavic language (Croatian?). A lot of the songs sound very similar, and the shrieking gets annoying. The guitars are essentially given one melody line for each song, and they just repeat it over and over. I wouldn't really recommend this CD. 1) Intro- very upbeat; electric guitar; fast and strong rhythm 2) Nestajemo- male vocalist; guitar emphasis; very fast; sort of dark 3) 5X5- high-pitched guitar; contrasting male voices, most speaking in low tones, with some singing 4) Velikimrak- sort of androgynous voice with male backup; strong guitars; sounds very angry, with weird cackling in the middle, lots of shrieking, and high-pitched guitar solos 5) Supak- sort of sing-songy, playful song; very fast and rapidly paced; male and female vocalists 6) Lizalica- another playful track; sort of boring and annoying; high-pitched and whiny male vocalists with similar high-pitched guitars 7) Pcelica- weird yelling at the beginning of the track; stronger melody than some of the other songs; unfortunately gets really repetitive; male vocalists 8) Dodi reci- male vocalist; alternates between going fairly slow and fast; upbeat and fun 9) Cekam cudo - also fun and upbeat; sounds too much like the previous song, though; still a male vocalist; better guitar solos, though 10) Znam sto me ceka- good rhythm; male vocalist; guitar riffs are boring and high-pitched, though; vocalist breaks into what seems to be nonsense in the middle of the song 11) Idemo- slower than a lot of the other songs; singer is pretty androgynous, I can't tell whether it is male or female; pretty boring 12) Kukamo se- pretty fast-paced song; sort of shrill, but pleasant to listen to; larger focus on the guitars; male vocalist 13) Klinke (bonus)- sort of mellow and fun; sounds like they enjoyed playing it; pretty fast, with again, androgynous singers 6. bombardiranje new yorka - compilation Reviewed 2003-07-16 by Your Imaginary Friend (kzsu,ca,usa) 1) dkk - offbeat, exotic, sorta spoken word avante with mostly drums, guit, some bass 2) dkk - avante dub feel w/ Croatian spoken word 3) zvonko i guzk - samba feel, loungy chill a la Os Mutantes 4) zvonko i guzk - silly feel, swingy, toylike 5) opyum - driving funky progish 6) opyum - cover of Lucille, in english, strange 7) messerschmitt80's feel pop, in Croatian 8) messerschmitt - 12 bar blues, weird 9) lutajuci dj zdena - boogie woogie, fucked up 10) lutajuci dj zdena - strange bouncy 11) ventil inc - proggy "hard rock" cool 12) ventil inc - garage rock feel 13) dzumbus - 30 sec solo guit intro, false ending, then funky prog band thing, instrumental 14) dzumbus - heavily chorused guit, sax and horns, Ghost in the Machine era Police, cool, in Croatian 15) mandrill - cheesy Kiss riff, funky rock 16) metrobolik - cheesy 80's pop 17) lou profa - "watching the detective" reggae pop rock 18) deal - cheesy 80's rock 19) kamo sutra - slightly surfy pop rock 20) kran - darker rock, slight 70's funk flare, garagy 21) headliner - driving fuzzy super cool garage rock w/ new wavy synth 22) klit o'ris - cool solo guit, low fi hammers, mostly chill 23) dlsd - very quiet lead in, another strange avante solo quiet guit, w/ soke noise here and there DDR : 10-track Demo 2 (2005)**** This is a very good (post-rock) indierock band with some waverock influence, and depending on opinion, a psychedelic touch (the electric guitar playing especially). The drumming, keyboards (organ,..) and bass often refer to the German wave and English poprock from the post-punk influenced musical period. I heard a recent 4 track and an 8-track demo. Some members also play in the psych flavoured indierock band Sad Eyed Lemurs. Here on this latest recording the group sound at its best. They have really an untypical sound for Turkey, which is somewhat comparable to groups like The Sound (-from back in the '80's, if you remember/experienced them-), but somehow with a slightly psychedelic tension, and with more attention to the instrumental passages driving mood (played by 2 guitars, bass & drums). Highly effective and recommended !! Influences of üner include Sonic Youth, Pixies, Fugazi, Can, The Wire, The Fall, Gang of Four, Joy Division, Josef K, Mogwai, Replikas, the Stooges, Man or Astroman?, Electrelane... Your Imaginary Friend Reviewed 2005-05-18 (kzsu fm, ca, usa) Its been a couple of years since our friends in Croatia have gotten a package through customs to KZSU (previous ones had been "confiscated" probably due to the CD cover art). This one has experimental prog elements all over it, funky and dub rhythms, and interesting uses of sitars, vocal effects, etc. Its the vocals, however, sung in their native tongue, that seal the decidedly exotic experimental feel to all. An excellent example of the strangeness of Eastern Bloc prog rock thats evolved since the 60's, and the Velvet Revolution of that region. 1) bed rok - strange post funky Euro experimental rock 2) z malo reci - eastern bloc "anti-folk" if you will, acoustic upbeat 3) tica kljucalica - chill dark funky cool 4) urokana ulica - sitar and experimental elements to this contrast w/ the strange vocals, cool stuff 5) moje reci - dubby-jazzy, echoey vocs if youre into that 6) cicak u kosi - echoey vocs and underwater tone, dark spooky slow sparseness, huh? like eastern bloc Swans meets Neu 7) gospodari sveta - dubby near reggae 8) bed rok - is it art? file this track under "anti-folk", noisey acoustic guitar centered 9) trazil sam tebe - dubby for sure 10) biljka koja je mogla spasit svet - another dub-reggae ditty, singing "mari-juana" 11) ja bi stel da se nekaj desi - strange 70's funky sci-fi pop feel 2. bombardiranje New Yorka - compilation Reviewed 2003-04-09 by Your Imaginary Friend (slusaj najglasnije!) FUCKING INCREDIBLE! Croation comp of rock and other strange eastern bloc creations. Each artist contributes a pair of songs. Lots of psyche, garage rock, punk, surf, but all with a Croatian, eastern bloc bent. There is something strange about Balkan, Czech type rock bands. Quite often they end up emulating western prog bands, but always fail to not brand it with their own strange sentiment. Same goes for this cd, but on a rock level. There is some kick ass garage, art rock, and unclassifiable stuff here, and all of it has this twist to it that can only be explained by geographical means. This cd traveled a long way, managed to make it through customs (despite the cover art- another package from this guy was "lost"). Pretty sure the "special guests" are a lark (yes, I got this one this time). All good, lots of special treats. 1) strange little electro intro 2) cool upbeat electro rhythm, treated laughter, quite excellent 3) slow plodding, grows strange and noisy 4) mid paced synth, poppy 5) brief winding synth 6) multi-parted: funky synth rhythm w/ vocal samples in English, after 5 min chills out, turns slow hypnotic then super cool crowd chanting vocal sample builds, at 10 min turns into cool downtempo weirdness, 13 min upbeat new wave feel takes over 7) silence for 2+ min then electro funky backbeat reggae'ish feel almost, w/ fem voc samples, but really 12 bar form, this is really cool Hali Gali Halid Vo-Zdra 7" (Listen Loudest) $8 US/Canada, $10 world This is a real treat. Take Turkish folk music and mate it with primitive DIY punk and this is what you get. The first time I heard this I flipped. I played it for a friend of mine who is pretty much a buff on this stuff and he fell over backwards. Really, just like one of those cartoons where someone falls out of the frame. That is how good this is. Now if you are into the ol' 1-2-3-4 never take any chances, put your wallet away because I won't take your money. But if you want to hear a one of a kind record, here ya go. One more thing: You are probably wondering why this 7" is going for $8 postpaid. Well, it is because it cost me a little bit more than your average 7" record. Not only were they made in 1991 but the label is from Croatia. I bought up half the label's remaining stock and I am pretty sure he is gonna archive the rest, so once these are gone, eight buck will be a steal. Satan Panonski Nuklearne olim pijske igre CD (Listen Loudest) $8 US/Canada, $10 world The legends that surround Satan Panonski (aka Ivica Culjak) are as crazy & intense as the music he made. Part artist, part punk, part circus act, part terrorist, Satan Panonski represents the extreme of punk rock. Put Von Lmo, Genesis P. Oridge, and David E in a room fill it full of blood & distortion and shake. Drafted into the Croatian army during the Yugoslavian civil war, they used him as an interogator...and then put a bullet in him when he got out of line, at least that is one of the stories. There is both pain and celebration here. Primitive, smart and unique. 24 songs recorded in 1990. Gatefold sleeve. No samples but this cd is consistant with what is on Nulearner.... Satan Panonski Ljuljajmo ljubijeni ljubicasti ljuli CD (Listen Loudest) $8 US/Canada, $10 world Because of Satan Panonski's extreme stage presence and music, he sometimes gets refered to as Croatia's GG Allin, but that is selling him short. Panonski was far more of a poet and an artist than Mr Allin. There is a creativity in this music that goes beyond 1-2-3-4. It is the kind of creativity and energy you hear in the Electric Eels or Liimanarina, to throw more names from the punk rock underground at you. Guarenteed to make the mall punk in your world cry. 21 songs from the late 80s & early 90s. Gatefold sleeve. No samples but this cd is consistant with what is on Nuklearne.... Trust me. Another in a very interesting series of compilations mailed to us from a Croatian label. Remarkable in many ways as this not only includes very indigenous bands but (what the fug?) Al Perry from Tucson, Bob Urh and the Bare Bones and The Coffin Killers from New York. But it makes sense cuz there is a strong undercurrent of swamp blues low fi rock on this, as if Arizona and Louisiana somehow has infiltrated the former Eastern Bloc. Is that bizarre enough for you? Then check this: the highlight of this is track 6, a Croatian band that sounds like Doo Rag, or Bob Log sick blues, but sung in Croatian (!!). Followed next by Croatian dub-reggae. Exotic yet familiar. Strange yet normal. This is what hanging around KZSU is all about. 1) spooky Slavic sounding, almost stereotypical with organ and slight polka-folk flavor 2) upbeat sorta funky proggy feel 3) Al Perry sounding a bit like the Pork Torta, smarmy and not very "desert rock", instrumental 4) another very very a-typical Al Perry instrumental, trippy stoney almost 5) I'd almost say this isn't Al, its so trippy fuzzy and stoney rock, cool instrumental 6) slow doo rag'esque swamp blues, fucked up sung in Croatian 7) Croatian Dub Reggae. There was a spirited attempt by someone stateside-I forget who-to get titles to the people; Lola V. Stain, Satan Panonski & Machine Gun were all releases on the aforementioned labels that I seen here in the USA. Perhaps not the most mindblowing sounds to pass through your head, but pretty damn unique & solid especially considering their locale. But then a civil war come along & that was the end of it. Both label's functioned out've Zagreb-the capital of Croatia as well home to an arts academy & a university-which took a quite a pounding after the secession from Yugoslavia, so it's no wonder the carpet had been rolled up. There probably wasn't none left! The records 'n tapes that had been around were gone, not to be seen anytime soon or ever again. It was sad & tragic on many levels, not the least of which was what had happened to people involved. There was a lot of "what if's" to conjure up, but as the years kept grinding away, so did one's feeble hopes. The bands & releases became hallowed footnotes, the history of them almost beyond comprehension. I mean, you could find an address to write, but chances are the building/house/street destination no longer existed. Pretty heavy when you think about it. I figured just be patient & hope for the best. So then cut to 2006. I'm looking through the S-S Records catalog & I see this 7" from 1991 by Hali Gali Hazid on the Listen Loudest label & it's in stock. Scott Soriano had sniffed out a few copies, presumably from the source. I couldn't believe it. Great news! I snagged one & let me tell you somethin, you'll be hard pressed to find a more exotic mix of rock & folk.....anywhere! The beguiling charms of (presumably) gypsy trance & traditional Croatian are seared into a slab of western rock what's swagger sounds implictly American (in origin). It would be pure conjecture to point out their influences as Velvet Underground and Stooges. For one, it's not that obvious. True, them bands might be the source, but you gotta gorge yourself through a primitive rasher of Pere Ubu, (Metal Box era)PIL & Angel Face before ya get there. And don't forget a very heavy dose of ethnic zonk as potent 'n fortified as the blackberry wine that was no doubt copiously consumed as these tracks was recorded. It staggers, it croons, pinwheels, rips 'n howls & it does so on a mantle all it's own. A most amazing find & if your gonna spend 8$ for a 7" this year, why not make it this one.Go to http://www.s-srecords.com/ for more info.
