Laibach

Laibach were back in Glasgow for the first time since 2004 as part of their 30th anniversary tour, it was still rather astonishing to realise that it was only their third visit in a very long career. Laibach's music resonates with many in Scotland and naturally fits right in with Glasgow's industrial origins. Unsurprisingly they do have a large and long established fanbase in Scotland, tonight many of them grabbed this rare opportunity to completely pack out the Classic Grand in the centre of Glasgow which is built into Central Station's railway bridge.

The stage was crammed full of equipment including two projectors and their screens, so it was not going to be possible to fit on a support act therefore shortly after 9PM the show began. The Laibach musicians manoeuvred into position onstage; deep Kraftwerkian style vocals sounded as dark ominous music seeped through the hall as the first track 'Boji' began, next Mina Spilner stepped slowly onto the stage with the megaphone, Milan Fras following on shortly later in time for his part.

The show started with the new interpretations of the early Laibach songs which I'm now starting to get quite familiar with even without the album, having managed to catch a few shows in the past year. Afterwards I did ask about the long awaited album however while there is no date yet finalised for its release I have been assured that it is due at some point soon. The Laibach Revisited section of the show contained nine songs, two of them new although I did hear 'Nova Akropola' a few months earlier in Trbovlje. The second song was completely new to me, which is mainly an instrumental and quite ambient; I suspect this to be 'Slovenska Zena' having checked with some other fans.

The revisited songs have gone down very well with both old and new fans, it's reminiscent of Laibach's early music while enriched with melody sequences and various samples. While it does not have the stark brutal power which Laibach had produced in the early eighties, it is much more accessible and appealing to a wider audience. Hopefully it won't be too long before the CD is released; each time we hear it live increases the desire for the album.

Milan totally drives the show adding drama and intensity to the overall performance, onstage he is utterly unique and completely captivating, ultimately so different from any other performer. Mina has a great voice which adds contrast to Laibach's music; onstage she was dressed in a black militant outfit generating a stylish totalitarian look fitting perfectly with the dark industrial inspired songs from Laibach Revisited.

Milan had left the stage during 'Slovenska Zena' while Mina performed the small amount of singing that featured in the song. Next, 'Tanz mit Laibach' started up and Milan stomped back onto the stage and the sheer energy and powerful beats had the most of the audience bouncing and it continued with some more tracks from WAT and the old favourite 'Alle Gegen Alle'. This middle section of the show had the forceful up-tempo music which many Laibach fans thrive on and the Glasgow audience certainly lapped it up. Someone had earlier knocked over a glass of water on stage and very gradually it had spread into a rather large area, the band had noticed and initially seemed wary but soon forgot or ignored it. Halfway through the show it was already becoming clear that the show was going to be a classic performance, the audience was very enthusiastic and those onstage were clearly enjoying themselves with a great set.

For the encore, America, Anglia and Francia were played rounding off a fantastic concert and memorable night. It was a full house with a very appreciative crowd and the venue was excellent and in a central location so we are all hopeful that Laibach will return to Glasgow in future European tours.
