The Arena

Laibach

The Scottish Debut

Laibach's truck entered Glasgow for their first ever concert in Scotland, playing at the small Arena club in the city centre. After quite a long wait outside possibly due to the process of adapting the equipment and props to fit the small concert hall, we entered and headed straight to the merchandise stalls which was lit up by NSK candles. As usual the stalls always attracts a lot of business, saves the bother of having to order from Ljubljana. As we looked around the stalls a loud noise like a muffled explosion or thunder in the distance suddenly erupted from the speakers then repeated after a brief silence. This continued for a short spell, meanwhile Ivan Novak was busying himself with the projection equipment at the back though barely fifteen or so yards from the stage. Soon the muffled explosions stopped, the lights dimmed and the band minus Milan walked onto the stage. A loud shrill erupted and NATO began with it's deafening militant techno to the point that it was almost overwhelming the small venue; the knees were bouncing to each beat. The music, presentation, stage lights and projection film immersed the audience to the exhilarating Laibach experience. Milan made his slow austere entrance for the third song Final Countdown reaching the mike just in time and delivered in the famous deep deep gravel tone. His stage performance is in stark contrast to the rest of the band who perform like stern and stiff communist soldiers while Milan stomps about like a totalitarian dictator in the best way he could on a small stage, occasionally stopping to stand in majestic poses. They performed all the material from the NATO album, all of which came across great live especially NATO, Dogs of War and Alle Gegen Alle. Three tracks from Kapital including Wirtschaft Ist Tot and rounding off with a small selection of others including one of my favourite Drzava. They ended a great concert with a rousing performance of Life is Life. It must have taken a lot of effort to modify and adapt to the small Arena but it made the concert a more intense, spectacular and memorable experience.
