My name is Kirstie MacLeod and I have just completed an MA (hons) in Gaelic. I came to university straight from school but originally to study psychology, however the flexible degree system here allowed me to continue to honours in Gaelic which I had chosen as one of my 'other' subjects in first year. I knew before starting at University that there would be a significant financial strain related to becoming a full time student rather than going straight into work and thought I'd better apply for anything that may help to ease this strain.
Benefits of being awarded the Talent Scholarship
The impact of any scholarship should not be underestimated. £1,000 per year is massive when you are trying to live day to day off a very limited income. The two instalments make it easy to manage, with one payment in each semester. My first year scholarship was used to buy a laptop and printer (both of which have lasted the four years). Over the past three years I have used the scholarship as part of my general income, however it has allowed me to make full use of the opportunities available at University. I have used it for paying for travel and equipment which allowed me to take part in the University's sports club; it has also meant that I've had enough money to travel home at the weekends if I feel like it.
