English Language
Our undergraduate programme
We offer a full range of undergraduate courses in English Language, covering topics such as semantics, sociolinguistics and dialectology, grammar and lexicology, phonetics and phonology, name-studies, English historical linguistics, and medieval English literature.
At undergraduate level we offer a full degree programme in English Language, leading (as in all the ‘ancient’ Scottish universities) to the degree of MA. Level 1 and Level 2 are usually taken in the first two years of the MA curriculum, alongside other subjects.
Students with an appropriate qualification (e.g. A-level English Language) may enter directly into Level 2; please contact the Head of English Language (Jeremy.Smith@glasgow.ac.uk) if you wish to discuss this possibility.
Levels 3 and 4 constitute our Honours programme; entry to Honours is conditional on good progress at Levels 1 and 2.
Glasgow’s undergraduate programme in English was rated as outstanding in the most recent National Student Survey.
