Electronic & Software Engineering

Why this degree?

Electronic and software engineering combines the study of hardware and software and applies it to the field of computer science and electrical engineering. Studying this degree will give you a deep understanding of the knowledge required to lead teams that will design and build the computerised systems and networks of the future.

This degree is run jointly by the School of Engineering and the School of Computing Science and as such you can take it as either an engineering degree (BEng, MEng) or as a science degree (BSc). The BEng and MEng degrees are fully accredited by the Institution of Engineering & Technology while the BSc degree option is accredited by the British Computer Society.

The first and second years of the Electronic and Software Engineering degree are designed to teach you the elementary skills and techniques required in both the electrical and computer science sectors. You will gain a knowledge of operating systems, programming languages and databases, as well as a working understanding of electrical circuit theory, analogue and digital systems design and digital communications. Using these skills you will have the opportunity to choose courses and modules in years three and four that are of particular interest to you. In doing so, you can develop a detailed knowledge of a specific field of software and hardware engineering that you would be keen to work in.
