Computing Science
(in Partnership with the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT))

Computing science is the study of information, computation and computational thinking. It is wide-ranging, from programming, programming languages and engineering large software systems,
to the design and evaluation of human/computer interfaces, algorithms, computer and network systems, and information retrieval and storage systems.

This programme will provide you with a deep understanding of the theory and practice of computing and give you the opportunity to study a broad range of computer science topics. The programme encourages independent study habits that will stand you in good stead throughout your professional career.

Introducing the School of Computing Science

  • The School of Computing Science at Glasgow is rated as one of the top ten schools for research in the UK, according to the last independent UK research exercise, and is ranked in the top 150 computing science departments in the QS World University Rankings.
  • With 35 academic staff, 32 research staff and more than 90 research students, we host over 130 externally funded research projects with a value between £2m and £3m each year.
  • Our teaching excellence is evidenced by our ranking as top or joint top in overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey in four of the last six years.
  • We have around 700 students in undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes each year.
  • Our BSc (Hons) Computing Science programme is accredited by the British Computer Society and the Institution of Engineering & Technology.
  • We are a major partner in the Scottish Informatics & Computer Science Alliance which promotes collaborative research in computer science across Scotland.

Introducing the Singapore Institute of Technology

SIT was established by the Ministry of Education in 2009 to offer undergraduate degree programmes primarily for polytechnic graduates. In partnership with various reputable overseas universities, SIT has broughtto Singapore some of the world’s top industry-focused degree programmes targeted at growth sectors of the economy.

Through a unique tripartite collaboration with its overseas university partners and the five local polytechnics, SIT represents a new model that is set to become a key pillar of university education. SIT also adopts a distributed campus model to allow greater synergy and efficiency. Through this model, SIT’s degree programmes will be housed within an SIT building in each of the polytechnics to cater to an intake of at least 2,000 full-time students per academic year by 2015.

Programme structure

You will study almost the same programme in Singapore as students on campus in Glasgow in the final two years of their BSc (Hons) degree.

In the summer before year 1 you may be required to study two short courses on algorithmic fundamentals and Linux. These courses are intended to bridge gaps between the eligible diploma programmes and the collaborative programme.

Year 1

In your first year you will study

  • Team project
  • Professional software development
  • Advanced programming
  • Algorithmics
  • Distributed information management
  • Database systems
  • Interactive systems
  • Networked systems
  • Operating systems
  • Programming languages

During the vacation between years 1 and 2 you will study Professional skills & issues in Glasgow.

Year 2

In your second year you will study

  • Individual project
  • Advanced networking & communications
  • Cyber security
  • Distributed algorithms & systems
  • Human-centred security
  • Mobile human computer interaction
  • Multimedia systems & applications
  • Safety-critical systems development
  • Security management.

The existing Honours programme in Computing Science is already accredited by BCS and IET, making graduates eligible for membership. Accreditation of the collaborative programme is being sought. Renewed accreditation is expected to include Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status, together with partial Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Chartered Scientist (CSci)

Articulated diplomas

Admission to the collaborative programme will normally be restricted to students who have completed an eligible diploma programme with a GPA of at least 3.0
