The Employability Skills Programme

‌The Employability Skills Programme (ILM accredited):

  • Develops your soft and functional skills which organisations require, enabling you to add value to your organisation
  • Helps develop your career
  • Gives you an insight into the realities of working life and how to act.

Background

In today’s competitive marketplace organisations seek those who not only add value but who have the skills to help transform their organisation in the face of continuous and rapid economic and technological change. All employees, whatever their discipline, need to be equipped with the right employability skills.

Graduates must be able to work in a team and communicate and persuade - both orally and in writing.

Nearly two-thirds (65%) of employers state that graduates lack the interpersonal skills necessary to manage people.

The ability to communicate is the most important skill that a graduate can possess, according to employers. This is followed by problem-solving, team-building and motivational skills.

CMI 21st Century Leader, 2014

Today, organisations are concerned that newly qualified graduates are not equipped with the right employability skills to succeed in the workplace.  Almost two-thirds of business leaders said that their graduates were failing to develop vital skills such as self-management and timekeeping, while 69% criticised their business and customer awareness and 37% were concerned at their attitudes towards work.

In 2012, Alec Pearson developed an interactive, innovative and scenario based global workplace readiness programme entitled ‘The Employability Skills Programme’ to address the skills gap raised by organisations and industry bodies. This  includes classroom discussion, group based  activities  and  use  of  award winning  video learning material.   Access  to additional  on-line learning  material  is  also provided via a dedicated and secure Employability Skills On-Line Resources website.

The ILM accredited programme, designed through close collaboration and input from leading organisations, equips students with key transferable employability skills, through discussion of the attributes, characteristics and behaviours required in organisations to ensure they understand the realities of working life. Thereby helping them to advance their career and understand how to add value in their next role.‌

Delivery

The programme consists of 12 core modules delivered in a variety of methods.  This includes classroom discussion, group based activities and use of award winning video learning material.

Access to additional on-line learning material is also provided for an entire year via a dedicated and secure Employability Skills On-Line Resources website.

Testimonials

“The programme provided a wealth of information covering every aspect of working life, and numerous tips on personal professional development. I particularly enjoyed taking part in the variety of exercises throughout the programme. In the summer, following the programme, I was selected for work with a FTSE 250 company and I strongly believe my development on the programme was a major contributing factor. I will continue to apply the knowledge I gained in the programme in the future.” Joanne Liddell.

“Thank you for providing such an excellent course, which I found to be really informative, but most importantly engaging. It was the first time I attended a course of this kind where we discussed matters that few text books cover, yet that are as important if not more important than the technical capabilities that we come out with following the completion of our degrees. I would like to thank you for providing us with this learning opportunity again” Vladyslav Medvensky

“It is one of the best programmes I have attended, I learned so much about myself, furthermore I am now aware of the issues I could be faced with when working in a business environment and also how to deal with these issues. I would strongly recommend everyone to attend this course.” Huang Lu

I just want to let you know again, how much I enjoyed the programme. It's invaluable knowledge  that I'll bring with me throughout my academic and managerial career.” Sigrid Bryndorf.
