The University has four student organizations. It has two student unions, Queen Margaret Union and Glasgow University Union, the Students' Representative Council which represents the students in matters which affect their interests, and Glasgow University Sports Association which represents the views of all students involved in sport at the University. University clubs are available for a wide range of activities and interests and open to all students.

Student Union Code of Practice

Statement on arrangements to comply with the Act

The University Court has approved a Code of Practice relating to its Student Unions, a copy of which can be viewed at the individual Student Union Offices or at the Court Office.

Every student has the right under the terms of the Education Act 1994 NOT to be a member of a student union. Students at the University of Glasgow can therefore choose not to join the  Glasgow University Union (GUU) or Queen Margaret Union (QMU) and can also choose to opt out of membership of the Students' Representative Council (SRC).

Where a student chooses not to join any of these student bodies and opts out of membership of the SRC, the welfare services offered by the SRC will still be available to that student.

You are asked to note that there are various restrictions on the activities of student unions by the law relating to charities - in particular that union officials are restricted in their expenditure of union money to the purposes for which it was entrusted to them.

The Scottish Office has published a helpful note on this which can be viewed at the individual Student Union Offices or the Court Office.
