Postgraduate Leadership Programme

Tutors:  Robin Henderson,  Chris Russell, Elizabeth Adams

This course is now fully booked for 2011/12.  Please contact Elizabeth Adams if you would like to be added to the waiting list for 2012/13.

Although you might not feel you are in the position of a leader at the moment, you may be using leadership skills as part of your role as a researcher. This could mean mentoring others or managing relationships and projects with collaborators, sponsors or your supervisor.

Many of you will aspire to be leaders in your future career and will be seeking to understand how to motivate and inspire others, confront difficult problems, ask the right questions and come up with creative solutions.

Throughout the Postgraduate Leadership Programme, you will hear from experienced tutors and speakers from a range of backgrounds on what they think it takes to be a successful leader and influence others towards a common goal.  A key part of the programme is the consideration of your natural strengths and weaknesses, personal values and the style of leadership that suits you best.

Successful completion of the assessment will enable you to gain accreditation from the Chartered Management Institute.

You must be available to attend all sessions.  We recognise this is a large time commitment and therefore you will be asked to provide an email from your supervisor, confirming that you have discussed your plans to attend.  To book a place, please email Elizabeth Adams (elizabeth.adams@glasgow.ac.uk

This course is open to Postgraduate Researchers from all subjects, who are at least 6 months into their PhD.   Following feedback from last year, we think it's helpful for everyone on the course to have undertaken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator workshop.  If you haven't done this, please try to book a place when the booking form opens.

2 years down the line...was it worth it?

We caught up with some of the 2008/9 participants...

'being more aware of how we are with other people – how we come across and communicate – is very important and this course made me much more aware of how I am with people at work'

'I am now working as a lecturer. The programme raised my awareness of group dynamics and gave me insight into motivating and succesfully working with a group of people. It  helps to analyse and constructively handle upcoming issues in a team setting. The trainers were excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I would recommend this to all PhD students: looks great on the CV and delivers long-term benefits'

'I now plan my week’s work at the start of the week which gives me more motivation.  It has helped me set personal deadlines that are manageable. I structure my workload to allow more personal time.'

'Communication with fellow lab group has improved.  I understand more about the way I like to work.  I have more confidence in my ability to finish'
