New developments: GUU-Stevie building

Construction has started on a new £13.4 million sports and social facility on the site of the 1960s Glasgow University Union (GUU) on Gibson Street.

The new facility will create new facilities for the Hive, including a nightclub and four new cafe/bars. And vastly increase the amount of indoor sports space available on the Gilmorehill campus. Linked to the existing Stevenson Building, the extension will provide an additional:

  • Four court multi-purpose activity hall with viewing gallery
  • Increased cardiovascular and stretching provision
  • Increased muscle conditioning provision
  • Increased exercise studio space including a martial arts dojo studio

‌It is hoped that the new building will be completed by late 2014 and will conform with BREEAM guidelines, helping to reduce the University’s carbon footprint.

‌The construction will use natural materials wherever possible and make full use of natural light meaning that the building will quickly become an attractive and practical part of the landscape of Gilmorehill and the West End.

The plans will also allow for greater public access than is currently available, so that local residents may enjoy the benefits of our new and improved facilities.

Speaking abou the new development, Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, said: “The student experience is central to what we offer at the University of Glasgow and this development will greatly enhance both our sporting and social facilities at the Stevenson Building and the Glasgow University Union.

“It is an ambitious project and one that is part of our ongoing strategy to improve and invest in an innovative and efficient way. What will emerge will be a truly dynamic, high-quality facility that will be used and appreciated by staff, students and the wider local community.”
