We love our Library

Being one of the largest university libraries in Europe, our Library is right at the centre of our students' experience - in fact it is the most used building on campus. Over the last 5 years we have spent around £12 million keeping it cutting edge, and with another £8 million due to be invested over the next 5 years, we are ensuring that it's still on the cutting edge going into the future.

Alongside approximately 2.5 million books and journals stored on the premises, there are 2,500 study places, more than 800 PCs, WiFi throughout, and daily opening hours from 7:15am to 2:00am. But, as well as modernising on the inside, by summer 2013 the Library’s exterior will be completely changed too. The old concrete exterior will be covered with new aluminium panels which, apart from looking great, will extend the life of the building and make it around 50% more energy efficient.

Moving beyond the four walls, in recent years the University has also invested heavily in digital resources. Now staff and students can access e-journals, e-books and other electronic resources on mobile devices from anywhere in the world, perfect for when the weather is more Scot of the Antarctic than great Scottish summer!

Did you know that over 1.6 million people visited the Library last year?

University Librarian, Helen Durndell said: “It’s vital that the Library keeps pace with the needs of our students today. I’m pleased to say that over the course of the last year we have uploaded 37% more digital course materials online, and we have seen our e-book usage increase by 150%. We have been working hard to cater for the increasing numbers using our services and resources online from mobile devices. We are piloting ‘Summon’, an academic search engine, which searches across a huge range of our resources - books, journal and newspaper articles, databases, conference papers and more, from a single search box.”
