Computer clusters
- "Booking" machines by leaving your belongings at a desk is not allowed.
If you have been absent from your desk for more than 15-20 minutes (i.e. the screen has gone blank), your account may be logged off to free up the PC for another student (this will happen automatically in future)
- You are allowed some acceptable personal use of PCs, but please do that at quieter times (early morning, evening or weekend -see the usage pattern chart) If in doubt look around you!

Passwords

Changing your password, setting up a challenge response for recovering lost passwords and how to get your password reset.
New students have a temporary password which will expire after 6 logins. After you change it, your password will expire after 365 days.We suggest therefore that you change your password at the beginning of term as a minimum. -

Off campus/remote access
- VPN this allows a secure connection between you and the Univeristy.
- Remote desktop service A virtual computer cluster desktop which allows you to use the same applications and access the same filestore as a cluster machine.
- My Glasgow Access to all your University on-line services:including Webmail, MyGlasgow and Moodle. Also access your MySite which gives you a place to store documents and links, create blogs, wikis, web pages and RSS feeds, and share these with other students and staff.
Message of the day
When logging into Cluster PCs in the Library you will see the MOTD. Please familiarise yourself with the information there and look out for updates!

Locations

The University provides several central computer clusters in the Library and Reading room. Colleges also maintain their own local computer labs/clusters.

Opening hours

Central clusters are open during library opening hours. College and school opening hours are available at each location.

Printing

In order to print from an open cluster you first need to purchase printing credits.
Note: you are responsible for choosing the destination printer. Black and white is usually the default. -
Remote access

The Remote Desktop Service Allows remote access to a virtual CSCE desktop including Outlook 2007 and full IE functionality regardless of Operating System used as long as the Remote Desktop Service protocol is supported.

Please don't save your files to the desktop when using a cluster machine or the remote desktop service. They won't be backed up!

MyGlasgow provides direct access to University web services including MyCampus, Webmail, Moodle, Library Account, IT Helpdesk, and Sport Online.

MyCampus allows you to manage your personal, academic and financial information online. Access is through MyGlasgow.

Moodle

Moodle is a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) also known as a Course Management System (CMS) or a Learning Management System (LMS). It is a web-based tool that can be used to create effective online learning sites and manage learning resources.

Library

You can search online for materials held by the University of Glasgow Library as well as access ebooks and ejournals. You can also login to check your record and reserve library items.

Disability Service

The Disability Service is where you should go if you have any queries or problems relating to a disability. It can also help you with your IT requirements. For advice about assistive software and how to obtain software for a laptop, contact disability@gla.ac.uk (or phone 0141-330 5497).
There is also an Assistive Technology Centre in the main libary. Contact the Disability Service to learn more.

All courses (with the exception of ECDL) at the university and are free of charge.

European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL)

ECDL is a certified qualification (endorsed by the British Computer Society) that verifies your computer knowledge and practical computing skills. It is recognised throughout Europe.
The course is subsidised by the University so you only pay a fraction of the usual fee.
