Students love the Glasgow experience

Glasgow ranked 1st in UK for international student satisfaction.

The University of Glasgow has had a fantastic year with outstanding league table results. The International Student Barometer (ISB) 2011 ranked Glasgow 1st in the UK for satisfaction in a worldwide survey of international students. The Sunday Times University Guide, the QS World University Rankings and the National Student Survey (NSS) have all seen Glasgow improve markedly on last year's results, achieving significantly higher ratings in all three tables.

An impressive 96% of our international students agree that Glasgow is 'a good place to be', according to the International Student Barometer 2011. International students also report 94% satisfaction with the University's expert lecturers, and 91% of final year students are satisfied with their learning experience.

Our ISB rating is higher than the UK average of 86.9% and unusually, overseas students at Glasgow are happier the longer they are here.  Taking all the ratings for learning, living and support experience together the University is 1st in the UK and third in the whole ISB survey.

The survey, which is the largest of its kind, canvasses international students' views on the teaching, services and the overall experience of their chosen university. The summer 2011 survey compared Glasgow against 65 international universities, 44 UK institutions, 12 Russell Group universities, and six Scottish institutions.

Earlier in this year we had great results in The Sunday Times Good University Guide coming 20th in the UK and second overall in Scotland. The Sunday Times Good University Guide is drawn up from a broad range of criteria, taking into account student satisfaction, teaching and research quality, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student to staff ratios, graduate unemployment levels and university dropout rates.

Changes to the methodology of the NSS league table placed greater emphasis on student satisfaction - especially teaching quality, academic support, and assessment and feedback. Glasgow received a glowing 90 per cent satisfaction rating from our final year students, a result that put us joint top in Scotland and joint seventh overall in the UK.

This year the University also achieved its best ever scores in the QS world University Rankings, soaring 18 places from 77th to 59th in the world. The QS league table looks at 600 institutions worldwide and assesses factors including reputation, graduate employability, research and student staff ratios. Glasgow's good result, as one of only three Scottish universities in the top 100, reinforces our position as one of the world's leading teaching and research institutions.

Professor Anton Muscatelli, Principal & Vice Chancellor of the University of Glasgowsaid: "Being in the top 1% of world universities is fantastic, and is a tribute to our tremendously hard working staff, researchers and students. We do not need League Tables to tell us how well we are doing, but we can still be justly proud of these independent endorsements of how much we have improved."
