Dr. Demoniak's Resources

Summary

The Flying Base

This Jumbo jet-sized craft flies around the North Atlantic on a random pattern. It has chameleon circuits which make it hard to see, silent engines and is radar invisible. Communication is its main purpose. It is used to send the signal which controls satellite TV broadcasts, communicate with a variety of top-level minions of Dr. Demoniak and, most importantly, receive signals from the base in Tibet. The flying base is vital in the chain of clues, as the players can find the Tibetan base from here.

It is fairly lightly defended, relying mainly on stealth. It has air-to-air missiles and a few troops on board.

The Spell of Concealment

If anyone tries to find Dr. Demoniak or his secret base (or anyone in it) with magic, this global enchantment makes the result seem to be a ruined set of buildings on top of a very steep mountain in the Sahara - south eastern Algeria. This is in fact a place of ambush by Morgan and his team. If the encounter with Morgan’s gang has already occurred this could be changed to Atlantis.

This spell was originally cast by seven mercenary wizards. Three of them were kept on the payroll to maintain it.

The Secret Base

This is inside a hollow mountain in Tibet. Not the same hollow mountain used in Dr. Demoniak’s third attempt to take over the world. A different one. The base is the size of a small city. There are barracks and other living quarters, spacious apartments for supervillains, entertainment facilities, machine shops, vehicle bays, labs, offices (to handle admin and payroll), cells and lots of other stuff. The ground slopes upwards. At the summit is a huge building with armoured walls. Most of Dr. Demoniak's employees believe it contains the doomsday device but it's a fake. The building is empty. Access to the doomsday device is actually via a small unobtrusive building. A long staircase and lifts lead down to the device itself, its power plant and the magma pool. The Death Dragon Mark II is concealed inside the magma pool. (There’s a tunnel leading up to the base and a concealed entrance in the mountainside.) Inside the mountain is fairly cold, as the magma is too far down to provide much warmth.

The cells have room for many prisoners, but currently only contain three - Captain Quantum and a couple of locals who came too close.

Base Defences

The base is extremely well defended. The mountain is surrounded by sensors, anti-aircraft batteries and other computer-controlled weaponry. There are regular patrols by robots and agents in cold weather gear. Inside, the base is defended by an army of agents, robots, power armour troops, many supervillains, Dr. Demoniak's robot duplicates and Dr. Demoniak himself in the body of the Death Dragon Mark II.

The Doomsday Device

The Doomsday Device produces huge amounts of ‘quantum energy’ by means of a partially phased quantum energy emitter. The quantum energy is generated in Dr. Demoniak’s secret base, then transmitted to the target through an unusual dimension called underspace, thus concealing its source. In underspace, few of the normal physical laws apply and distances can be traversed much more quickly. Physically the doomsday device consists of two large sets of machinery. One set to generate quantum energy, the second to open the dimensional rift. The rift is produced in a metal ring structure in the centre of the room and the quantum energy is channelled towards it by electromagnetic induction. The power supply for the doomsday device is magma pumped up from hundreds of miles below.

Access to the device is via a long staircase and set of lifts going down from the unobtrusive building mentioned above. On the first level is the room containing the doomsday device (though the first level is pretty far down). On the second is the power plant. On the third is the magma pool with walkways over it and huge pipes conveying magma up to the power plant.

Underspace

In appearance underspace is largely blue - rolling blue hills, light blue sky, blue plants and the occasional large blue monster. The physical and magical laws in underspace are different from our dimension. Doc Hazard’s devices will all give crazy readings and not function. Dr. Sorcery’s spells will fizzle. ‘Recalibrating’ is possible for both of them but without additional information this is a matter of trial and error, taking ages. How can they get this information when their normal sources (gadgets and spells) are not working? This makes travelling to underspace basically a trap. There are two possibilities for escape. Hotshot will actually be more powerful here as he is closer to his dimension of power. As his power involves opening a dimensional rift within his own body, he may be able to effect an escape. Alternatively, Rockface may remember reading a theoretical paper on underspace. This will allow him to feed the right recalibration figures into Doc Hazard’s dimension machine (if he’s got one).

If the PCs are getting bored in underspace, there can be a fight with some monsters or something. Also, Dr. Demoniak may send a force to attack them while they are helpless. His forces' technology will be correctly calibrated for underspace, of course.
