The Glasgow University Shorinji Kempo Club is open to students, staff, associates and alumni of the University of Glasgow, providing they are also members of the University's Sport and Recreation Service (SRS). It is possible to arrange for guests to be admitted at weekends and during University holidays, but we must know in advance that you're coming so that we can let reception at the Stevenson Building you're visiting us. A guest fee of £3.50 per session would be charged for entry to the building in this case.
What it costs:
- Full Membership: £40. Gets you full membership of British
Shorinji Kempo Federation (BSKF), including insurance. Your first 3
sessions are free to enable you to try out the club before paying money.
- Membership Renewal: £40. Payable every April to the
BSKF. In your first year of training, you will pay a fraction
of this, as you paid for a full year's membership when you joined.
- Instruction fees: £15 per term. The first term is free
for beginners. These fees go towards our instructor's expenses when
attending instructors seminars and suchlike. Shorinji Kempo instructors do not make their living from teaching Shorinji Kempo, they do it because they want to. As such, it is not unreasonable that some of their costs associated with their own training and instructional courses they have to attend are contributed to by the club.
Other things you will need to purchase, as and when
you decide to become a full member, are:
- Dogi - the familiar white suit worn by most martial
artists. You can start off with any Karate-style dogi readily available from high-street sports shops. One of these will set you back around £20.
- A copy of the Tokuhon, the textbook outlining the
philosophy of Shorinji Kempo, an understanding of which is
required to progress through the ranking system. This costs around
£12.
- Grading fees are paid by the candidate. These start at
£15 for the 4th Kyu (white to yellow belt) grading and increase by
about 20% to 25% each time as
you progress to higher levels.
