Coming along to a martial arts class for the first time can be intimidating so here are the answers to some questions you may have about Shorinji Kempo. If you have any other questions please contact a committee member or come along to a class and ask them in person.
- Do I have to have trained in a martial art before?
Absolutely not; while it may be an advantage, it may also be a disadvantage. Shorinji Kempo is unique and everybody starts at white belt, regardless of any previous experients in other arts as Shorinji kempo is a unique entity.
- Is there a beginner's class?
Since the basics of practice are covered in every session, there is little need for this. Throughout all class you will receive help and guidance from more experienced students and the instructor will place no minimum requirements on your ability aside from a willingness to have a go. Don't be daunted by the apparent experience and ability of those around you - they all went through the same experience as you and you'd probably be surprised to discover how recently.
- How fit do I have to be?
You do not have to be an Olympic-level athlete before coming along, and by training in Shorinji Kempo your fitness will naturally increase. Many people have taken up Shorinji Kempo as a means to improve personal fitness in the form of the recommended few sessions of exercise per week, and found it ideal for this purpose.
- Do I have to have to know Japanese?
Again, no. You'll pick up what you need during the normal course of training. Some people have however been inspired to learn the language but it is entirely optional. There are translations available with the most commonly used words and everyone will be more than happy to help you out.
- Do I have to come to every class?
The short answer is that there is no minimum attendance requirement, but obviously attending more classes will mean that you progress faster. Do bear in mind though that class fees are set at a flat rate per term so it's in your interests to get your money's worth!
- Is Shorinji Kempo suitable for women?
Very much so, Shorinji Kempo has a high proportion of female students and instructors. This could be due to the fact that techniques of Shorinji Kempo are designed to ensure that strength and size are not an issue.
- How safe is Shorinji Kempo?
Shorinji Kempo has an excellent safety record due to the fact that the co-operative nature of practice ensures that everyone gives due consideration to the abilities of their training partner regardless of their grade or experience. However, Shorinji Kempo is a contact martial art and as such some risk of injury is always present.
