This is a scholarship scheme for PhD candidates, from any discipline, where the project is jointly supervised between Glasgow and Strathclyde universities. These scholarships will either enhance existing Synergy collaborations, or assist in creating new areas of Synergy collaboration between Glasgow and Strathclyde.
Scholars will graduate with a joint award from both Universities.
Overview of current PhD projects
In the current round of applications, one award will be made by Strathclyde, and one by Glasgow.
- Background
Both universities are deeply committed to the Synergy Research agreement. It is a formal element in both universities' strategies and we are very pleased with the collaborations that have been built over the past years. See our main webpage for details of some existing collaborations.
These scholarships offer a maintenance award of £12,923 in 2008/09, and are for candidates of high academic calibre. They are intended for new, full-time students, tenable for three years. Each award will include payment of Home/EU fees, and will be accompanied by a single payment of £2000 additional support (to the principal supervisor) to support research, e.g. conference attendance, minor equipment etc. Any unspent balance remaining from this additional award will pass back to the awarding institution.
- Eligibility
The project must be jointly supervised between Glasgow and Strathclyde universities, i.e. a principal supervisor in one institution and a second supervisor in the other institution.
- Regulations
If a candidate is offered a Synergy scholarship, and then withdraws for any reason, the scholarship will be withdrawn from both student and project, and offered to the first reserve candidate.
