Undergraduate Advisers of Studies

The University has undertaken a review of ‘Student Advisory Needs’ alongside the Students’ Representative Council and resulted in the Burrows Report which was reported to Senate in June 2010. This report looked at a wider range of student support needs and how the strands worked together to ensure a coherent system of support was in place for students.

A key element of the report was reviewing the approach to Advising for undergraduate students. The Report acknowledged a number of strengths in the current system for advising students and sought to build on these by making the following suggestions:

  • Adoption of clear, guiding principles for Advising
  • Advising systems to be built around programmes of study and for students to be advised by staff from their intended areas of study
  • Decrease the adviser:advisee ratio to 1:25
  • Acknowledge the role of Adviser of Studies as an integral part of a member of staff’s workload, not as an additional role
  • Enhanced role for training and support for Advisers of Studies

The Chief Advisers Sub Committee was tasked with developing and implementing the new Undergraduate Student Advisory System.

The committee agreed to implement the new system in session 2012-13 with transitional arrangements to be in place in 2011-12.
