Snell Exhibition 2012-2013

Snell Scholarship 2012-2013

A Snell Exhibition/Scholarship will be available at Balliol College, Oxford, for candidates admitted in session 2012-13. Applications for the award are invited from good Honours graduates of the University of Glasgow, or from students in their final Honours year at the University of Glasgow who hope to graduate with a first or good upper second class degree, and who would like to pursue further study at Balliol College.

1. Eligibility
As well as being either Honours graduates or in their final Honours year, applicants must have a connection with Scotland by birth (either in respect of themselves or at least one parent), domicile (at least three years) or education at a school in Scotland (at least three years) before admission to the University of Glasgow. They must have spent at least two years as an undergraduate at the University or one year at Glasgow and two further years at another Scottish university.

2. Tenure
The awards are normally tenable for the duration of the award holder’s course, depending on satisfactory academic progress and the duration of the degree programme followed.

3. Value
The value of the Exhibition is normally £2,500 per annum and the Scholarship is normally £8,000. All applicants who are eligible must also apply for an SAAS or Research Council Award. The Exhibition can be held along with these or other awards, but Balliol College reserves the right to lower the value of the Exhibition for applicants in receipt of substantial funding from such awards.

4. Application Procedure

a) Applicants for the award must apply for admission as a graduate student to the University of Oxford and Balliol College using the standard Oxford applications forms and procedures, which are explained in detail in the Graduate Studies Prospectus of the University of Oxford. The Prospectus is published on the web at www.admin.ox.ac.uk/postgraduate/ and sets out the arrangements for obtaining an application form.
b) The closing dates for admissions applications are as stated in the Prospectus. Applicants wishing to be considered for the Snell Exhibition should apply for admission as a graduate student comfortably the 22 January 2012.
c) Applicants should give Balliol College as their college of first preference on the application form.
d) The documents to be submitted with the application for admission as a graduate student vary according to the applicant’s proposed programme of study. Applicants required to submit specimens of work should seek the advice of the Head of School.
e) Applicants should indicate their wish to be considered for the Snell Exhibition by writing conventionally or by e-mail to the Tutor for Graduate Admissions at Balliol College asking to be considered. (e-mail: graduate.admissions@balliol.ox.ac.uk).  No further information, beyond what is already provided in support of the University application, need be included.
f) Applicants for the award should also write to Amber Marquez-Higgins in the Senate Office at the University of Glasgow, indicating the proposed topic of research/study, outlining (with registration number) academic career to date, and providing contact address/telephone number appropriate to June/July 2012.
g) Applicants who are not elected to a Snell Exhibition may still go to Balliol College provided both that the College and the appropriate University of Oxford admitting body have accepted them, and that they have in place sufficient funds for their support.

5. Selection
Before applicants may be considered for a Snell Exhibition, they must have been accepted by the relevant Faculty Board of the University of Oxford and by Balliol College.

Selection for the award will typically be based on academic performance to date and there may also be an interview held in late June or early July. The interviews are held in alternate years in Glasgow and Oxford.  Applicants must ensure that they are available for interview at that time.

Candidates should advise the Head of School that they have applied for the award as the Senate Office may require copies of final examination scripts.

6. Accommodation at Oxford
Snell Exhibitioners are offered accommodation in the Balliol Graduate Centre at Holywell Manor for the first year of their graduate degree programme.
