Revision of Regulations for Research Degree Examinations and Introduction of Guidance Notes for Research Degree Students

Education Committee agreed to the revision of the regulations for the degree of PhD by Research as contained in the University Calendar, changes covered the following:

  • introducing a provision to waive, subject to the agreement of the candidate, a second or subsequent oral examination;
  • the candidate's right to request the presence of his or her supervisor;
  • requiring the presence of a Convener throughout oral examinations;
  • denying candidates permission to withdraw a thesis once submitted;
  • withholding from a candidate the identity of examiners until after his or her thesis had been submitted;
  • the appointment of two External Examiners in cases where the candidate was a member of University staff;
  • the appointment of Honorary staff as Internal Examiners;
  • clarifying the declaration made by the supervisor on the 'Intention to Submit' form.

Education Committee also agreed to the introduction of new Guidance Notes for Research Degree Students [pdf] to supplement the regulations.

At Education Committee on 14 June 2004, there was further discussion on the revised regulations surrounding the following issues:

  • Defining the role of the internal examiner;
  • Defining the maximum period of study prior to submission of thesis;
  • Requiring matriculation for purposes of writing up.

Final approval of the revised regulations for PhD by Research ( 1 ) was given by the Clerk of Senate under Summer Powers in July 2004.

1 2.2 of this regulation which relates to the maximum period of study prior to the submission of the thesis only applies to students first matriculated in session 2004-05 and thereafter. The rest of this regulation applies to all matriculated research students, regardless of their initial year of entry.
