Changes required to current policy and practice:
1. Rather than automatically transferring to “writing up” status, all students should be required to provide a thesis completion plan towards the end of the minimum period of study. This plan should be used to consider whether the student can register for “writing up” status or should be required to continue full registration.
Action required: DoGS / Graduate School Administration
2. The term ‘writing up’ should be changed to ‘Thesis Pending’ for registration purposes. All documentation and web guidance relating to the writing up period to be changed accordingly.
Action required: Student Life-Cycle Project Team / Registry / Senate Office / Graduate School Administration / VP(R&E) Office
3. The fees for the Thesis Pending period should be increased to £240 (currently £90) with the option to refund 50% should the student complete within the first 6 months of the period.
Action required: Registry / Graduate School Administration
4. Students who allow registration with the University to lapse rather than register for Thesis Pending status should be required to pay the full £240 fee when they subsequently register for submission of their thesis.
Action required: Registry / Graduate School Administration
