At the graduation ceremonies graduands must wear the gown and carry the hood appropriate to the degree which they are to receive (hats are not worn at graduation ceremonies).

The University does not provide gowns and hoods. Gowns and hoods may be hired from the robemaker appointed by the University.

You can hire your robe from Ede & Ravenscroft Ltd - the University's official robe makers. You should ensure you hire your robes as soon as possible, and not later than three weeks before the ceremony. You do not need to wait until you have enrolled for graduation to order your robes. Print out your order confirmation and take it with you when you collect your outfit on the day of your ceremony.

Photography

Ede & Ravenscroft Ltd provide the University's official portrait photography service available on graduation days. Free-lance photographers may also be present on campus, but you are warned to be wary as they may insist on immediate payment and then fail to honour the order. The University does not take responsibility for these commercial payments.

Members of the audience are permitted to take photographs/videos but are asked to do so from their seats and not move about the Bute Hall during the ceremony.

Graduation DVDs

The University's Media Production Unit will be recording the Graduation Ceremonies. Order forms for DVDs will be available, on graduation day and directly from the Learning and Teaching Centre.

Webcast

There will be a live webcast of the ceremony. An archive of previous ceremonies is also available.

The certificate you receive contains your name, the type of award (certificate, diploma, degree), the subject of study and the classification of the award (if appropriate). The certificate is often referred to as a “parchment” and will have the University seal affixed.

Name on parchment

Your degree/diploma certificate will be printed with your name shown in the following format: 'first name(s)/given names(s) then family name' unless you ask us to put your family name/surname first. Only the names you registered under and which appear on our records will be used. Please ensure that your name is correctly recorded on your graduation enrolment and in your student record.   Any changes needed should be made through Student Services Enquiry Team (SSET), before the appropriate enrolment deadline for your ceremony.

The name that appears on your certificate should be the same as that on an officially recognised form of identification document such as your birth, adoption or marriage certificate, your passport, driving licence, national identity card or other legal document. Using a different version of your name may cause you difficulty in the future in proving that the certificate is yours.

Once your certificate has been issued it is not normally possible to amend your name. The only retrospective changes that can be made are where an administrative error has occurred or where we are required to make a retrospective change under the provisions of the Gender Recognition Act 2004.

Disability support for guests

The graduation ceremonies take place in the Bute Hall of the University located on level 4 of the main Gilbert Scott Building. Level 4 is accessible by staircase but elderly or disabled guests may find it easier to use the lift located outside the University Visitors Centre (A11 on the Campus Map).

Within the Bute Hall itself much of the guest seating is unfortunately only accessible by steep staircases. We request that students inform us when they register on graduation day if any of their guests are elderly or disabled and may be unable to climb stairs so that we can ensure that they are allocated tickets to seats in areas of the Bute Hall to which there is lift access.

There is no public parking on campus and parking on the street in the vicinity of the University is difficult. We are however able to arrange parking on campus for guests who are disabled blue badge holders. Please download, complete and return no later than 10 days before your ceremony, the ‎
