The Mac Robertson Postgraduate Travel Scholarship 2013 application round is now CLOSED to applications.  The 2014/15 round of applications will be announced in March 2014.

Introduction
The University of Strathclyde and the University of Glasgow are proud to jointly offer the Mac Robertson Scholarship.

Aims

  • to provide funding for postgraduate research students (PhD or Masters by Research) to undertake a course of study lasting between two months and one year at a centre of advanced study preferably, although not necessarily, outwith Scotland;
  • to provide funding which will enrich and further the award-holder's academic experience and research achievements;
  • to provide funding to students fully registered and fully participating in the community of the University of Glasgow or University of Strathclyde.

The Mac Robertson Scholarship does not fund

  • conference travel
  • tuition fees or routine living expenses (other than those incurred on placement);
  • equipment purchases;
  • research or training integral to the completion of the applicant’s ongoing research project.

Eligibility: open to all Home/EU/Overseas postgraduate research students (PhD or Masters by Research) currently registered at the Universities of Glasgow and/or Strathclyde;

The prestigious Mac Robertson Scholarship is hotly contested and a high number of applications are received each year. The following will be taken into account when assessing applications:

  1. Eligibility - the scholar must comply with all eligibility criteria. 
  2. The research to be undertaken should be additional to and not essential to the completion of the applicant's research degree.
  3. Evidence of a collaboration between Strathclyde and Glasgow in the research being carried out would be advantageous.
  4. Evidence of an innovative proposal and/or initiative taken by the student to build relationships with international experts or forge links with world class facilities. 
  5. Evidence that the proposed project/travel would benefit the applicant's School/Research Institute.
  6. Clear evidence of communication with the host institution (e.g. welcome letter/letter of endorsement)

Applicants must comply with all eligibility and application criteria - no exceptions will be made.  Please note that some documents required for the application may take time to obtain, so we advise applicants to start this process as soon as possible. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

 
Candidates will be asked to provide several documents, including a detailed plan of their suggested use of the Scholarship. This plan must cover:

  1. Overview of the proposed trip, including name of the centre of excellence and proposed trip dates;
  2. How the Scholarship award will enhance your research;
  3. Sum requested, giving a breakdown of costs and expenses which the award is to cover;
    Awards will consist of travel costs plus subsistence up to a maximum level of £60 per day (includes accommodation). Individual awards are unlikely to exceed £4,000.
  4. Evidence that you will/have obtain/ed a visa if required for entry into certain countries;

Reports
Each scholar will be required to produce a report on his/her studies under the scholarship. The purpose of these reports is to show how the scholarship has enhanced scholars' research experience and provide Mac Robertson, our donor, with an update on his investment. Aims of project  To work with researchers at the University of Zurich to construct a Geographic Information System to analyse data collected in the field to examine how changing snowpack influences water flow to the bed of a glacier, and the resulting impact on glacier dynamics.

Aims of project  To work with a researcher at the Osaka Prefecture University on developing anti-cancer agents that work by binding to the protein tubulin, using the particular expertise of the Osaka laboratories and to gain a broader perspective on chemistry research and an insight into the highly competitive world of Japanese research
