How to apply for an ESRC Studentship

The first step is to find out which universities offer research training in the field in which you want to work.  To find this out, browse through the pathway descriptions available via the Pathway information page or on the SGS website.  These will also point you to contacts within each university who can give you further information.

You must submit two applications in parallel to be considered for an ESRC Studentship:

  1. a standard online application for Postgraduate study (please visit our PGR application pages for full information)
  2. an ESRC studentship application (details and forms below).

Procedure
By 30 March 2012, in addition to the online application for PG Research, you must provide the following application materials (hereafter referred to as the application pack) to your College Graduate School Office:

  • A completed SGS DTC studentship coversheet: Standard Pathway Cover Sheet 2012-13
  • A research proposal (maximum of 1200 words)
This must include, where possible, details of any specific training or overseas fieldwork requirements.  Failure to include these details in the proposal may result in no funding being available for such activites during the PhD.
  • An up to date CV
  • A statement of support from your potential supervisor(s)
  • A completed Equal Opportunities Monitoring form: Equal Opportunities Monitoring Form 2012-13
  • A completed AQM application form [AQM studentship applications only] : AQM Application Form 2012-13
AQM (Advanced Quantitative Methods) is not a separate pathway, AQM studentships can be held in any pathway with the exception of Economics.  AQM is any research/techniques that are advanced for the discipline.

Please note that pathways may require additional documents for the application pack (e.g. Economics).  Please check specific information posted about the pathway application process at University of Glasgow - click here.

Submit applications in electronic format only

Multiple applications
You may apply to more than one pathway, however you may NOT apply to more than one institution.  Should you wish to apply to more than one pathway you must submit a separate application pack for each pathway application.  However, you need only submit one application for study via the on PG application system.

Deadline 30 March 2012
The Scottish DTC-wide deadline for applications for 2012/13 studentships to be submitted to the relevant university contact is 30 March 2012.  As applications need to be checked for eligibility and supported by a potential supervisor, we strongly encourage you to make contact with your chosen Glasgow pathway representative as soon as possible, and well in advance of the final deadline.  Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances.

After the 30 March deadline, universities will work together to select the best students who have applied to study within each training pathway.  Decisions on who has been selected to receive studentships (and who is being held on a reserve list) will be made and communicated by mid-May.

Studentships will normally start in September/October 2012.

Should you have any questions about the application process, please contact your Glasgow pathway representative in the first instance or the PGR Service.
