Top 10 questions asked about the University of Glasgow Nursery

The baby is not born yet.  Is it too early to apply for a baby place?
No - the sooner the application is processed the better, since there is a long waiting list for the 0-2 age range.

Are there any places available immediately?
Due to high demand this is very unlikely and you will be put on a waiting list.  For baby places (0-2 years) the list is particularly long.

What are my chances of getting a place?
The University Nursery is intended for matriculated students and staff members of the University.  We aim to place as many children as possible and to maintain the Nursery at full capacity.  However, there is a long waiting list for baby places; for those lower down on that waiting list it is possible that a baby place will not come up at all.  In view of this we recommend that other providers of childcare are contacted.  The Nursery can usually place 2-5 year olds in a shorter period of time and although you may find yourself on the waiting list for longer than you had expected, it does not mean you have been forgotten.

Because of the competition for places, especially inthe 0-2 years range, the Childcare Committee (which is made up of 4 University staff including Human Resources and union nominees, and the SRC President) operates a priority rating system for all 0-2 applications in order to facilitate placements.  The Committee has agreed that priority should be given to applicants whose circumstances make it extremely difficult for them to return to or take up work or study at the University without a nursery place for their child.  Specific criteria used in the priority rating system are single parenthood, both parents being staff and/or students at the University, and having a sibling already in place at the Nursery, but any other family information may also be taken into account.  It is therefore essential when filling in the application form that parents give the Committee as much information as possible.

As a result of the priority system, the waiting list operates on an ongoing basis, and not on a fixed 'first come first served' basis.

How much are the fees?
With effect from September 2013 fees are as follows: £608 per month full-time; £304 per month part-time (based on 2.5 days per week); £28.05 per day session.

Can I apply for financial help?
Subsidies can be applied for by students and staff members of the University, but cannot be guaranteed.  Relative to your total family income, the University may help with a proportion of the fee.

Does the University offer any financial aid other than subsidies?
Students should contact either the SRC Welfare Adviser (0141 330 5360) or the Registry Office to discuss other areas of financial help.

If I have two or more children are my fees reduced?
Yes.  There is a 10% reduction in fees for a second child.  Subsidies can also be applied for, although if granted will be on the basis of one subsidy per family, irrespective of number of children attending the University Nursery.

What is regarded as full-time/part-time?
The Nursery is open from 8am to 6pm, five days a week, 50 weeks of the year.
Full-time: 10 sessions a week (5 mornings and 5 afternoons)
Part-time: 5 sessions a week (5 mornings or 5 afternoons or 2.5 days, for example)

How easy is it to get a part-time place?
These come up less frequently than full-time places, since they need to be matched up with other applications for part-time places, but we will do our best to accommodate, subject to the waiting list.

Where can I get an application form/information?
You can collect an application form for the Nursery at the Court Office Reception, Main Building, University of Glasgow.  Otherwise call 0141 330 6441, give your details, and a form will be sent out to you, along with a general information sheet.  Information on waiting lists can be obtained from the Court Office.
