Information for subscription members
The Library offers membership and services for graduates of the University of Glasgow and graduates of other universities, as well as corporate membership for businesses, schools, charitable bodies, museums, law firms, theatre companies and many more.
What does my membership get me?
- Access to more than 2.5 million books and journals
- Access to the Library from 07:15-02:00 361 days of the year!
- Use of the Library's enquiry service or help from our College Support Librarians for detailed subject queries
- Borrow up to 30 items at any one time
- Request items already on loan
- Self-service - borrow and return whenever the building is open!
- Request items from another library if we don't have it (there is a charge for this service)
- Self-service photocopiers are available
- Use of microfiche/film readers to consult microforms in the library's collections
- Consult our wide range of daily newspapers
What's not included?
Copyright and licensing restrictions mean that we cannot offer you access to our electronic resources such as databases and e-journals
General Council Membership
As a graduate of the University of Glasgow you can join the library as a General Council member. The annual membership fee is £40.00.
Having used the Library as a student, you will be aware of our excellent collections and ever improving facilities. General Council membership entitles you to continue using the Library, explore its vast and varied collections – from illuminated manuscripts to contemporary works in subjects ranging from Accountancy to Zoology. Please note however that copyright and licensing restrictions mean that we will no longer be able to offer you access to our electronic resources such as databases and e-journals.
Services available to General Council members
- Borrow up to 30 items
- Get support from College Librarians
- Access specialist branch libraries such as the Veterinary Medicine and Dental libraries
How to join
- Bring your General Council card or other proof of graduation as well as a form of personal identification e.g. driving licence
- You can pay by cash, cheque (made payable to University of Glasgow), credit or debit card
- Come to the Membership Desk on Level 2 during staffed opening hours
- Please note: we will take your photograph and print it on your card for security purpose
Special Reader membership
Graduates of UK universities can join the Library as Special Reader members for a fee of £60.00 per year. Graduates from non-UK universities should apply in writing to Suzanne Hartley, Library Services Manager (address at bottom of page).

- Bring your proof of graduation as well as a form of personal identification e.g. driving licence
- You can pay by cash, cheque (made payable to University of Glasgow), credit or debit card

- Please note: we will take your photograph and print it on your card for security purposes
- A fee of £5.00 will be charged for lost cards

Corporate Membership
Corporate membership is available to staff of businesses, schools, charitable bodies, museums, law firms, theatre companies and many more. Corporate Membership provides access to one of the largest academic collections in Scotland. The library has a book stock of almost two million volumes and thousands of printed periodicals, covering most academic subjects. Please note: Due to licensing restrictions, we are unable to offer access to our subscription databases and electronic journals.
Subscription rates
- £150 per year for three named members
- £75 per year for three named members for educational or charitable organisations
- £25 per year for each additional named member

The following benefits are available to all General Council, Special Reader and Corporate members.
Access
- Access to the library throughout our extensive opening hours
- Access and borrowing at the specialist branch libraries: Social Sciences at the Adam Smith Library in the Adam Smith Building; Chemistry at the Joseph Black Building in the main campus; Dentistry at the James Ireland Library in Sauchiehall Street; Veterinary Medicine at the James Herriot Library at Garscube
- Visit the Special Collections Department, European Documentation Centre and Library Research Annexe
Borrowing entitlement
- Borrow up to 30 items at any one time
- Renew your loans up to 5 times, if they are not needed by another user
- Request items on loan
- Search our collections through our website
- Login to your library account to renew or reserve material
- Receive due date reminders if you register your email address with us

- Get help with general enquiries
- Get help from for detailed subject queries
- Got a quick query? Ask at the Welcome Desk on Level 2 as you enter the library
