QR Codes
What is a QR Code?
A QR or Quick Response Code is a type of barcode. You use your smart phone to take a picture of the code which will allow your phone to launch a webpage, document or allow you to send an email or SMS message.
Most modern phones with a camera are capable of reading these codes. Your phone must have a QR Reader app to allow you to take a picture of the code. If your camera does not already have an app installed you can easily download one and they are usually free of charge. Check the link below to see which scanner to use for your particular phone:

Why use a QR Code?
Scanning a QR Code may be more convenient than writing down long and complicated URLs or contact details on scraps of paper.
Examples of QR Codes in the Library
At the moment you will find QR Codes in use in the Library:
- In Classic Search individual records include two QR codes. The code included on the right hand side of the record will allow you to save the details of the item you are viewing to help you find it on the shelves. The details include the author, title and shelf-mark. The other code is included in the 'bookmark this title' option and will allow you to save the permanent URL for the record.
Try scanning the QR code below. It has the details of a book held by the Library.

- In the New Book Display on Level 3. You can reserve a book when it comes off the display by scanning the QR code beside each book. This will take you to the catalogue record where you can use the 'Request it' option to place your reservation
- On the cover of some of the heavily used books held in the Short Loan Collection linking to the record for the e-book
Plans for future use of the codes are:
- On web pages and library signage for college librarians and library services, to store contact details
- Library on demand to link to ‘how do I’ videos
- Booking of study rooms
If your phone has wireless network access, you should be able to download data using QR Codes by connecting to the campus wireless network. A list of supported devices and instructions on how to connect can be found at http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/it/wireless/
