Information for students with disabilities
We work with Student Disability Services to support you when using the Library. You can contact Denise Currie (d.currie@lib.gla.ac.uk) for more information on using the Library.
So what can we offer?
Accessing the Library
The Library is accessible via the main entrance (Level 2) direct from street level. Once inside lifts serve all other areas of the building.
You are welcome to bring in a helper or a dog. If you wish to bring a helper into the Library or to have a helper fetch materials for you, please contact Student Disability Services to arrange this initially.
Loan Periods
Extended loan perods are available. If the book you need is only available for 4 hour loan, speak to the member of staff on duty in the Short Loan area, you may be able to have it for longer if demand is low. Contact Student Disability Services for information about extended loans.
Fetching Service
Books and journals can be fetched from the shelves for collection at the Library Services Desk. Please contact Student Disability Services to arrange this.
Lockers
The Library has some lockers available for use by students registered with the Disability Service. Please contact Student Disability Services to discuss requirements.
Rest Room and Accessible Toilets
There is a Rest Room on Level 10. Contact Denise Currie (d.currie@lib.gla.ac.uk) for more information. Accessible toilets are available throughout the Library building.
Study Rooms
The Library has a limited number of study rooms available for use by disabled students. Please contact Student Disability Services to discuss requirements.
IT Facilities and Software
The Assistive Technology Centre on Level 5 (Room 529) has a variety of assistive equipment and software. Please contact Student Disability Services for access information.
Emergency Procedures
There are fire refuge points in the lobby areas next to the stairwells on Levels 4 – 12. Levels 2 and 3 have fire exits at ground level. If you are studying on the upper levels of the building and depend on the lifts to get around or have visual impairment please make your way to the nearest Refuge Point when the fire alarm sounds. Each Refuge has a phone - use it to contact Security staff and let them know where you are. They will make sure someone comes to help you as soon as possible.
