Membership

The James Herriot Library is open to all members of University staff and students. Visitors are welcome to consult material. Visitors should email or telephone in advance to arrange a convenient time.

Searching for books and journals

You'll need to use the options under the Search For section on the home page to find books and journals. You can access this online from anywhere - home or campus. If you are on the move, why not try our mobile website!

If the item you need is on loan, you can recall it. Click on the 'Request It' and follow the instructions.

Our electronic and print journals are listed separately so you may get two hits in the results list for the same title. Please note that we don't always have the same coverage in print/electronic and some journals are only available in one format.

Borrowing

Items are checked out at the issue desk, stamped with due date for return. Books can be borrowed for up to 4 weeks (12 weeks for staff and postgraduates).

You can renew the loan period for items up to 5 times unless another reader needs them. This can be done online from Log into your Library Account if they are not overdue, in person, by email (vetlib@lib.gla.ac.uk) or telephone (0141 330 5708). Books can be renewed at the James Herriot or University Library. If a book has been recalled by another user, you will be contacted via your student email address and asked to return it by a specific date. The Short Loan Collection has different loan periods.

Returns

Books may be returned either directly to the James Herriot Library or via the University Library, except for short loan items which must be returned to the James Herriot Library only. A book drop is located beside the issue desk for returns. A fine is charged on late returns.

James Herriot Short Loan Collection

Multiple copies of books on course lists are kept behind the issue desk and are generally one week loan with renewal option.

Reference Material

A collection of reference works, including directories, foreign language dictionaries and atlases is located in the reference area.

Photocopying

There is a card operated photocopying machine. Photocopy cards and print credits can be purchased from the issue desk. Photocopy cards can be used in any branch library or main University library photocopier.
