Searching for books and journals

You'll need to use the options under the Search For section on the home page to find books and journals. You can access this online from anywhere - home or campus. Inf you are on the go, why not try our mobile website. If the item you need is on loan, you can recall it. Click on 'Request It'  and follow the instructions.

Theses can be searched for in the same way. Theses are kept in locked cabinets and must be retrieved by library staff. Theses are for consultation only in the library.

Our electronic and print journals are listed separately so you may get two hits in the results list for the same title. Please note that we don't always have the same coverage in print/electronic and some journals are only available in one format. Some older runs of print journals may be shelved elsewhere in the building and these can be retrieved by library staff.

Borrowing

Take the item to be borrowed, and your card, to the Librarian’s office. Books can be borrowed for up to 4 weeks (12 weeks for staff and postgraduates) and will be stamped with the due date for return. Alternatively, there is a self-issue machine available which will give you a printed receipt with details of return date.

You can renew the loan period for items up to 5 times unless another reader needs them. This can be done online from Log into your Library Account , if they are not overdue, or in person. If a book has been recalled by another user, you will be contacted via your student email address and asked to return it by a specific date. The Short Loan Collection has different loan periods.

Returns

Books may be returned either directly to the Chemistry Branch Library, or via the University Library, except for short loan items, which must be returned to the Chemistry Branch Library only. A fine is charged on late returns.

CBL Short Loan Collection

Heavily used textbooks on reading lists are kept in the Librarian’s Office and are generally available for 4 hour loan or overnight loan from 16.00 until 10.00 the next day.

Oxford Chemistry Primers are also kept in the Librarian’s Office but most can be borrowed for a longer period.

Reference Material

A collection of reference works, including chemical dictionaries and encyclopedias and foreign language dictionaries, is located on the right as your enter CBL.

The Safety Collection, including suppliers' catalogues, is shelved next to the reference books.

Photocopying

There is a photocopier on Level 4 of the Joseph Black Building within Room A4-03.

You will need to purchase a Departmental photocopying card from the box in the corridor outside this room.  £1 = 20copies.
