The Adam Smith Library is open to all University of Glasgow staff and students.

Searching for the things you need to read

You'll need to use the options under the Search for section on the home page to find books and journals. You can access this online from anywhere - home or campus. If you are on the go, why not try our mobile website!

Borrowing

If you wish to borrow books or periodicals take them to the Adam Smith Library Issue Desk. Books can be borrowed for up to 4 weeks (12 weeks for staff and postgraduates). Alternatively, there is a self-issue machine which you can use, which will give you a printed receipt with due date information. There is also a book return box.

You can renew items up to 5 times unless another reader needs them. This can be done online from your Library Account if they are not overdue. Renewals may also be made in person, by post or by telephone (0141-330-5648). If a book has been recalled by another user, you will be contacted via your student email address and asked to return it by a specific date. The Short Loan Collection has different loan periods

To borrow unbound periodical parts you must fill out a borrowing slip for each item and present them with your Student ID Card at the Adam Smith Library Issue Desk.

Allocations and Loan Periods

  • Undergraduates - up to 10 unrestricted books may be borrowed for 4 weeks
  • Postgraduates - up to 20 unrestricted books for 12 weeks.
  • Books and periodicals restricted to overnight loan may be borrowed for 24 hours.
  • Some items are restricted to either 4 hour or 24 hour loan.

Returns

Books and periodicals must be returned on or before the due date  Returns should be made to the Adam Smith Library Enquiry Desk or into the book return in the Library when staff are unavailable. Outwith library hours books may be returned to the University Library. A fine is charged on late returns.

Photocopying

There is a card operated photocopying machine. Photocopy cards and print credits can be purchased from the issue desk. Photocopy cards can be used in any branch library or main University library photocopier.

Reference Material

The Library holds a collection of reference works, including foreign language dictionaries which are located in the reading area.

Print Credits

You can buy credits online using a credit/debit card through your MyPrinting print credit account - see the IT Services advice on ePayment for printing on CSCE cluster machines
