Listed below are some information sources which will help you identify, locate and use information at what ever part of the research process you are working.

Resources to support students on placement in schools - that is junior fiction, junior non fiction and audio visual materials – can be found in the Main Library in the School Experience Collection. These resources cover the nursery, primary and secondary curriculum.

There are an increasing number of resources also available in electronic format. These include internet sites and podcasts. A select listing of these is also provided on these pages.

If you are searching the catalogue you can limit your search to this collection only: go into Advanced Catalogue Search and choose 'School Experience’ from the 'Location' option. You can also search within audio visual materials, for example if you want to find a DVD on a subject

Junior Fiction

This collection comprises novels, short stories, and picture books for pre-school, primary and secondary reading. Contemporary and classic authors and works are included in the collection. It is not a comprehensive collection of children’s fiction – in general, public libraries will have larger and more varied collections. The collection at GUL is designed to support the work of student teachers on school placement. It therefore reflects those authors and themes which are, or have been, popular in Scottish school.

The Junior Fiction Collection is located on Level 4 of the Library, and arranged alphabetically by the surname of the author

Junior Non-Fiction

The library stocks a wide selection of children’s non-fiction covering the subject areas of the Scotrtish School Curriculum. The collection is located on Level 4 of the Library, and arranged by the Dewey Classification Scheme.  

DVDs

The Library has a collection of DVDs to support the Scottish school curriculum. This collection is on Level4 and is is arranged  by the Dewey Classification Scheme.

Professional Practice Journals

The library subscribes to a number of professional practice journals which will be useful for subject and topic information, lesson ideas and plans etc. The current and recent copies can be found in the journals area on Level 3; back copies on Level 4.

Internet Sites

In addition to the resources mentioned above, students may well find it worthwhile to explore the wide range of teaching resources available on the internet. There are a great many internet sites produced by and for teachers, too many to list here, but the following are some of the best:

  • BBC Scotland (Education):excellent source of material for use in schools with the emphasis on Scotland
  • Development Education Association : an NGO which promotes education for a more just and sustainable world.
  • Educator's Reference Desk: wide-ranging website with a sub directory of lesson plans
  • The Gateway to 21st Century Skills: a Consortium providing educators with quick and easy access to thousands of educational resources found on various Internet sites. Searchable by topic.
  • Learn.co.uk: teaching resources based on the Guardian archive, including weekly topical lessons and free material. Extremely useful site.
  • Library of Congress - teacher's site, focusing on the use of primary sources. US bias, but useful nevertheless.
  • New York Times Learning Network: an online current and special events news site, containing an archive of lesson plans.
  • Primary Resources: free lesson plans, activity ideas and resources for primary teachers
  • Schoolzone: links to useful websites, searchable by subject.
  • Teaching Ideas for Primary Teachers: lesson ideas, activities and resources organised according to subject.
  • TESiBoard -  well organised, searchable site with a good variety of resources

Podcasts

BBC. Podcasts for schools. RSS feed to automatically receive latest episodes.

The Education Podcast Network   A directory of podcasts suitable for primary and secondary schools.

Podcasts for educators, schools and colleges. A podcast directory featuring freely accessible educational content from over 5000 podcasts from different podcast channels.

The children’s literature collection at the University of Glasgow Library is located on Level 4. Lifelong Learning

  • Centre for Research in Lifelong Learning: undertakes research on issues associated with lifelong learning and contributes to the development of future policy and provision in this area
  • CRADALL (Centre for Research and Development in Adult and Lifelong Learning)  based in the Department of Adult and Continuing Education (DACE) within the Faculty of Education in the University of Glasgow.
  • EUROlocal: a central repository for for learning materials, tools,reports etc developed by the learning regions in Europe.
  • Lifelong Learning UK – Upskilling Programme:  is developing local strategies for workforce development and improved access to continuing professional development in CLD.
  • National Institute of Adult and Continuing Education (NIACE): the major organisation in the field of adult education in England and Wales, it aims to promote the study and general advancement of adult continuing education. Very comprehensive website, with a good list of links. Is now responsible for the work of the Basic Skills Agency. 
  • Workers Educational Association (WEA): well established voluntary adult education movement, committed to widening participation and to enabling people to realise their full potential through learning.

  • Gruntvig :  a European programme focusing on the teaching and study needs of learners taking adult education and ‘alternative’ education courses, as well as the organisations delivering these services.
  • Global University Network for Information  : GUNI is composed of the UNESCO Chairs in Higher Education, higher education institutions, research centers and networks related to innovation and the social committment of higher education.
  • University of Victoria : Office of Community-based research Pascal : supports the development and assessment of initiatives relating to social, economic and cultural development, with particular emphasis on the role of social capital and lifelong learning
  • The Talloires Network :  an international association of institutions committed to strengthening the civic roles and social responsibilities of higher education

 

Community Development Organisations

  • BEMIS (Black and Ethnic Minority Infrastructure in Scotland):  acts as the voice for the black and ethnic minority voluntary sector and provides advice and information
  • Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights: formerly known as Glasgow Anti Racist Alliance (GARA), CRER is focused on helping eliminate racial discrimination and harassment, and promoting racial justice across Glasgow/Scotland.
  • Scottish Refugee Council : offers advice, information and assistance to asylum seekers and refugees in Scotland
  • Positive Action for Housing : Scotland wide housing charity working with communities, housing providers, voluntary organisations and faith groups.
  • LGBT Youth Scotland - youth and community-based lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organisation.

Description: contains articles on a wide range of interest to those involved in educational activities in communities; and promotes debate on issues of current interest

Description:  forum for theoretical and practical work in the broad fields of lifelong learning and adult, community and continuing education.

  • Infed: a searchable online encyclopaedia on lifelong learning and informal education
  • Social Care Online - excellent searchable website covering many useful topics in the area of social care and social work
  • Third Sector Research Centre -works with the Third Sector to devleop an evidence base for work in this area. It undertakes and reveiws research, and makes it publicly available.
