Think you know how to find information?

Do you think Google gives you everything? The answer is that it doesn't. We can show you how to find information that is relevant to your academic work using other resources and how you can access it free of charge.

Google can sometimes be a good starting point and we’ll go into why and when you might want to search it but there’s lots more information out there that’s hidden behind barriers.

The following questions might help you to decide where to look and how much to gather:

  • how much information do you need? is it for a presentation, essay or dissertation?
  • what is the time period – do you need to provide a historical overview or current information?
  • What type of information do you need? do you need books, journal articles, primary sources and raw data, official publications, statistics, maps, financial data, newspapers, historical documents, patents, standards?
  • where do you find academically reliable information relevant to your topic?

Have a look at the other information in this section to help answer these questions.
