Accessing E journals, E Books and Databases

The best way to access e journals, e books and databases is to use the Library website. If you go directly through Google or another search engine you might not get access or you may be asked to pay!

The majority of e journals, e books and databases are available both on and off campus and can be accessed using either GUID, VPN or resource specific passwords.

Use the search options on the Library homepage (QuickSearch or the specific search option under the QuickSearch box or the e-journals A - Z list) to find the resources you need to access.

Glasgow Unique Identifier (GUID)

Your GUID and associated password has replaced Athens/MyAthens. Don't worry, your GUID will give you access to all the resources and more that you previously accessed via Athens/MyAthens.

Students already have a GUID & password - your GUID is your registration / matriculation number followed by the first letter of your surname. Your password is the one you use to log into Moodle, Websurf, webmail etc. Read more about GUID for students.

Staff must register for a GUID associated password. Read more about GUID for staff.

On-Campus Access via a University PC

From your Library search or the e journals A - Z page you will usually be taken directly to the database or e journal or to a login box where you should enter your GUID and password.

In  a small number of cases the resource you are trying to access may require a specific username and password for access. Please contact Enquiries @ The Welcome Desk.

On-Campus Access via a laptop (wireless)

The campus wireless network is broadcast as "flexaccess". Your laptop (or wireless enabled device) should pick it up automatically. More than one wireless network may be available.

- select "flexaccess" to connect

Check you are connected to it by opening your web browser and going to www.gla.ac.uk

To access the internet and protected campus resources your device will need to connect to the campus VPN service (software installation may be required)
This is to allow you to browse securely.

See IT Services webpage: On campus access (wireless)

From your Library search or the e journals A - Z page you might be taken directly to a login box where you should enter your GUID and password. You may have to scan the web page to find the link to login. This may be referred to by any of the following terms:

NHS

If you are working on an NHS site, you may wish to consider applying for an NHS Athens account while you are in the NHS hospital or library. This will give you access to the electronic resources the NHS subscribes to. These may be complementary to the resources to which the Library subscribes.

Please note, if you are experiencing problems accessing a University of Glasgow resource from an NHS pc, we cannot provide IT support for this - please contact your local NHS IT Support.
