The introduction of ePortfolios to the healthcare professions.
Karen Beggs, ePortfolio Projects Manager, NHS Education for Scotland .
Abstract
Since 2005 the NHS Education for Scotland (NES) ePortfolio has grown from a regional pilot with 400 junior doctors to being used by over 60,000 people within four of the major healthcare professions (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and nursing/midwifery) and in partnership with over 25 organisations. Over a million forms have been submitted, including more than 60,000 personal development plans. The rapid expansion of the projects has brought with it a number of challenges, not least of which relate to the management of change within the large and diverse NHS workforce. Discussion will focus on lessons learned from moving from small-scale pilots to full implementation, and the different ways in which portfolios can be used to support reflection, personal learning, formative and summative assessment and quality assurance.
